NCDR: How does your garden grow?

Any other CD mamas out there gardening this summer? How are your gardens doing?

We are zone 7a and I am just starting to harvest some yellow squash and zucchini. My sungold cherry tomatoes have been producing for about two weeks now and I even got my first small bell pepper yesterday.

What's your favorite garden veggie? Any good squash recipes out there? I've got a ton coming in!!

Bonus points for PIPs!

So jealous. We usually plant around May1st. This year is was so cold I didn't plant until closer to the 25th.

My bok choy is a loss. It went to seed already because of the weird weather. My cucumber and cherry tomato and Roma tomato plants look good. I'm thinking I might get some in a few weeks. Not sure about the peppers, eggplant and brussel sprouts yet.

I just have a small garden. I do have rosemary, basil, and thyme in pots on my deck. I made some yummy pesto with my basil and some tarragon from my mom's garden.

I love growing as many tomatoes and cucumbers as I can. I make spaghetti sauce, salsa and tomato juice and cucumber onion salad all summer. I also grow one eggplant to make eggplant paremesan. No one else in my family likes it, so one plant is perfect for me.

  • We are 5a. I think I missed my time to harvest my broccoli, it has flowered :-(. My tomato, pepper and eggplant are growing great but no fruit yet. Cauliflower is growing well too! I hope they grow well, I love homegrown eggplant

  • I've never tried growing eggplant before. I'm pretty new to gardening though. I planted a bunch of melons this year so I'm interested to see how they do. LO was born in March so I definitely missed the spring season this year. My DH abd FIL planted my summer stuff for me for mother's day. I didn't get any herbs in this year and my rosemary died bc of our super cold winter. Maybe I can throw some basil into some containers on my deck. I do love pesto!!
  • We're on the border of 5a and 5b (central Ohio).
We've got herbs and tomatoes in pots.  They're all doing well.  Lots of green tomatoes, but none that are ripe yet.  We also planted some gooseberry bushes, but we won't get fruit off of them for at least a year or two.
I'd really like to go all "permaculture" on the backyard, but that's going to take a long time and no small amount of money.  Not to mention a lot of work.
  • We are zone 3. I didn't get my garden in until the end of May. We made a green house over it and it really hasn't done as much as I expected. I took the cover off last week. Maybe it needed more sun?

I need to hoe it, but it has been raining all week. Tomorrow is supposed to be 77* so I'm hoping to get something done.

Our garden is growing! I have strawberries in pots coming up. my watermelons are about to flower and so are the sugar snap peas. My tomato plant is huge. Pepper plant has some flowers right now andthe lettuce is delicious.

I have a good amount of radishes-but I had no idea that they're kind of spicy? I don't like them

  • I never know whether we're in zone 6 or 7 (northern VA).

We've got tons of mint growing and our rosemary and basil are doing pretty well.  We cheat with tomatoes and get a starter plant from the farmer's market.  They are still green, but definitely growing. I hope we can get some good ones this year. And our jalapenos are about ready to pick. The green peppers are looking good too. Should be able to harvest a couple small ones soon.

The strawberries were a bust, I think, and one of the bad t-storms we had broke our cucumber stalk :( so that's hanging on for dear life, but I don't think that it will produce anything.

Oh, and our summer squash was starting to look great, but only ever got to be about 2-4 inches long before getting mushy and/or burnt looking.   No idea what's going on there; too much sun, maybe?

I have containers. I have gotten a handful of strawberries but now my plant appears to be not happy with me. We have harvested some spinach and romaine as baby romaine since I started that container indoors early. My tomato plant is huge in its topsy turvy but nothing but 2 flowers so far. My big container has potatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant, cauliflower, and broccoli. The plants are all huge and I have a tiny cauliflower and two tiny cucumbers that I can see so far.

  • We have some pears coming in on our espaliers, so that's pretty exciting!

Our garden is mostly small so it's mostly herbs for us. Lavender, rosemary and sage are all doing well. I'm waiting on a few containers to be delivered so we can add a few more. At most I'll probably throw down a few lettuce seed packets so that we can have some baby green salads.
  • Our garden is doing okay this year.  We tried a raised bed this year instead of in the ground.  We've gotten green beans, cilantro, okra, tomatoes, squash and cucumbers.  I make garlic dill pickles with my cucumbers.  So yummy!!  We were hoping to can the green beans but I don't think we planted enough plants to get the yield I need to make a batch.  So we've just been getting enough to eat fresh with dinner.  But I much prefer homemade canned green beans.

We still have an in ground garden, which isn't doing too well.  We've got corn growing though and some melons.  Everything else hasn't really taken off.

Oh, and this is the first time ever that we'll have eggplant.  I'm not sure I've even ever eaten eggplant.

If you do a lot of pruning ( snap off any branches with no flowers, but not more than 1/3 of the plant at a time) you will get many more flowers and tomatoes
