1. What is the purpose or reason for block feeding?
2. If she does have green poop what exactly do I do about it? If there is an imbalance between the foremilk and hindmilk what can I do about that?
I didn't read the article REOM found but I'm sure it is full of info I can't give you. I'll share my experience though.
1. I had SEVERE oversupply issues with DD#1 around the time she was 8 weeks old. I talked to a lactation consultant who told me to stop pumping for a week or so and to do single-sided feedings (that way, only one side is stimulated in a 4-6 hour time period instead of both every 2-3 hours).
I was already doing single-sided feedings so she told me to double up for a couple days. I would do two feedings in a row from the same side. That took care of the uncomfortable oversupply problems I had in about a day. Then I went back to feeding from one side and switching every other feeding instead of every two feedings. DD was able to nurse more peacefully. I was drowning the poor thing with all the milk I had.
2. Not sure if you feel like she has an imbalance. But if you have oversupply and you think this might be causing it, you could try the block feeding for a while.
Now that I'm back at work I make sure to mix what I pump really well so there is a good mix of fore- and hind-milk since I routinely pump more than one bottle at a time.
Good luck! DD#2 took to BFing really well, much better than DD#1 did, but it is still HARD! I'm constantly worried that something I ate isn't agreeing with her.
Re: S/O BF Questions
I did a quick search for you, and this article seems pretty good. I hope Klaire is feeling better!
