First Anniversary

This Sunday is our First Anniversary :x but I'm a slacker and haven't made or bought anything for MH yet.  We will be out of town for a triathlon MH is participating in, so I won't even be able to make him a nice dinner (we'll go out to eat). Although I did order a re-make of the top tier of our wedding cake.

Any suggestions on what to get him or make for him?  What did you do for your first anniversary?

  • Mine is coming up too!!! We live in Texas and got engaged at the ranger game so I was thinking Ranger tickets and maybe a couples massage :) I am sure he will love anything you get him or make for him! happy anniversary!

  • We went to dinner at the restaurant where our wedding was held. Then stayed at a fancy B&B with butler service. Had the cake tier and no wine, because I was expecting my first then.

  • I think we went to Vegas our first anniversary.  I cant remember what I bought him. Now I buy him a nice bottle of scotch because he is annoying and has zero hobbies.

You could do a cooking class. Last year I sent him to a grillng class for a day. He learned a lot of great stuff. The man could barely boil water and now he can make a whole meal.

  • I got hubs a pair of tickets to see Jeff Dunham, he was at the state fair that year, and since the 1st is paper, I thought it would be fun. We had a blast!

  • We went to the beach for the weekend and ate at our favorite fancy restaurant. Like @gradschoolmom1234 said, we like the experience gifts.

Is the triathlon being held in a nice town? Would it be worthwhile to take an extra day off to spend there exploring together before or after his tri?
It's in Syracuse... the park where the tri is held is nice and I'm looking forward to hanging out on the beach with his family and cheering at the race.  You and @gradschoolmom1234 are right I should look into it and find something fun to do there the day before.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!  It looks like tickets are popular-- maybe because it's the "paper" anniversary?

@QueenOfSpades622 I guess that explains why we have the same #s in our screen names haha. Happy anniversary to you and YH!

  • We got tickets to see a Broadway show.

Since he is participating in the tri I would caution you not to plan too much the day or two before.  DH is really a stickler for his marathon prep.  I might recommend getting him a "finishers" jacket or plan to have his medal and photo(s) framed.

Edit:  DH is also exhausted afterwards so you might want to avoid planning something immediately afterwards.  Our anniversaries we used to go out for good pizza.

I'm just like YH, I have to eat specific things at specific times, get a certain amount of sleep and all that before a race.  Luckily, MH is much more go with the flow and a schedule change or even all full day of activities the day before won't bother him.  However, after the race he will be exhausted and I'm sure I'll just end up having to drive us home. Do you race too?

  • Happy Anniversary!! I got DH a new golf club, which is something he was really wanting. To stick with the paper tradition, I bought a notebook that we keep on the counter and write little love notes to each other in. It's a sweet little keepsake we can look back on forever.

    I love this idea!

@Hazel622‌ - heck no...it has been several years since i was running. I call myself a professional chaser. It is fun running to various check points throughout a marathon course to see DH.

Though we did sign me up for a 5k in August. Given the OB telling me that I need to rest more, I am not sure if I am going to be able to complete it much less run it.

Haha Now I'm excited to be a professional chaser this weekend. If your 5k is walker friendly you could walk or do walk/run intervals (I've been loving those lately) but spectating seems to be more fun anyway.

Thankfully the 5k is a walk/run. It is now making sure I have the stamina to walk it. My biggest concern is if it overly hot that day. Seems lately 1 mi has been my limit. So I have time to work myself up to the longer distance... I am sure my dog won't mind.

  • Happy anniversary! I agree with PP that experience gifts are extra wonderful and memorable.

I did a more DIY, sentimental option for last year's anniversary that was also a big hit with DH. I took a deck of cards and wrote something I adore about DH on each one with a sharpie, to make a deck of "52 things I love about you." It was fun to do, and I was surprised how much it meant to DH. If you google it, there are lots of ideas/suggestions about it. My advice if you do it is don't worry about making it look amazing - the amazing is all the share memories and all the compliments you get to give.
