Harmony Test

Has anyone taken/been offered the Harmony Test? Its a new non-invasive blood test to test for downs & other chromosome defects. My doctor says it's highly effective and since it's genetic testing it will tell for sure boy or girl ( and you can take it as soon as you are 10 weeks )

I had blood drawn because I am going to be 35 when I deliver and the idea of special needs child make me very nervous. I have been reading up on the test online now of course after I took it and now am terrified. Some sites say there are high instances of false positives and then babies being fine, I dont think that's impossible but unlikely and I dont know maybe I was better off not knowing! I was tempted by knowing boy or girl so early! Now I am terrified!

Re: Harmony Test

  • Interesting, I haven't heard of it but we are doing a first screen next week. I think that aside from miscarriage, genetic disorders are my next biggest fear so I know how you are feeling. Try not to borrow worry though. I always find the waiting is worse than knowing.
  • Loading the player...
  • the waiting game stinks. I did this so that I could get a 'normal result' and worry less and now I wonder if I would be better off not knowing

  • I did MaterniT21 the first time and will do Panorama this time.  It's fine. Waiting for the results is the worst part.

  • The literature I got yesterday from my OB says a positive test doesn't necessarily mean anything is abnormal and a negative test doesn't guarantee a healthy baby either. To me this made the tests not worth it. It will be what it will be. I'm also in my early 20s and have no family history to make my OB feel as though this baby is at any high risk. Maybe my opinion would be different if those two factors changed?
  • I'm planning on doing whatever tests they offer me. I like knowing as many things as I can know. But if they say I don't need it, I'm probably not going to push for it.

  • I'm getting an NT scan and some blood work, but I'm not sure if it's Harmony, Mat21, or another. I need to ask at my next appt.

  • My MW uses the Panorama test so that is what I am doing (AMA). She recommended doing the normal screenings (nt scan, quad test etc) as well.

  • How do I get one of these? Should my midwife just offer it to me? I didn't do one last time, but now I do feel like knowing things are good and healthy will make me less anxious about what may happen again. My next appt is on the 3rd at 10 weeks 2 days. Can I just ask then?

  • You can ask for it. Unless you are advanced maternal age (AMA) or have some other reason that you would have likely genetic issues, your insurance probably won't cover it. I think the test usually costs around $200 if your insurance doesn't pay, but you'd have to call the lab to confirm.

  • I hAd the harmony test done last Monday on 6/9. I find out the results tomorrow or Friday. The waiting has stunk but it's almost over. Hopefully good news. This will be my first time doing this test.
  • My MW just ordered a Maternity 21 and additional screening bloodwork for when Im 18 to 20 weeks. Im only 9 now so its a bit of a wait but if there is one thing pregnancy is teaching me, it's patience.

  • I had the Harmony test done on Monday... And now waiting for results. I'm trying not to think about it too much but the waiting definitely sucks! I'm 34 now so I thought it was best tFX all our results come back fine...
  • Sorry that sent without my finishing... Thought it was best to have the test... Although there is nothing I can do about the results. Just think posivitvely!
  • I'll be doing harmony on 7/14. It seems like it's so far away. The nurse told me that since I'm "old" ;) , my insurance will cover it. Apparently, there are a lot of women under 35 who call the office asking to get it so they can find out the sex of the baby early. They won't do the test unless there are medical reasons. The nurse seemed to be annoyed by these women.

  • My doc did kind of emphasize that you can find out the sex of the baby with the Harmony test. She said she recommends it for everyone because it's so much less invasive then the others, however the lab they use is very straight on the cost, they even clear it with the insurance ahead of time so you aren't surprised by cost. I wish 35 wasn't 'old' in baby dr speak.

  • OP, I really appreciate your candor in reasoning why. I agree completely and am in the same boat.
  • @adallasbride Congratulations! May I ask your age - or rather, did you take the test because of age? Also, the results - they just tell you normal or abnormal yes ?

  • The literature I got yesterday from my OB says a positive test doesn't necessarily mean anything is abnormal and a negative test doesn't guarantee a healthy baby either. To me this made the tests not worth it. It will be what it will be. I'm also in my early 20s and have no family history to make my OB feel as though this baby is at any high risk. Same here! I declined them all yesterday. I'm not too worried about it (surprisingly!). It would be nice to know the gender Early though. But I will be going to a place near me that does it at 16 weeks... so only 5 more weeks!
    Congrats on your boy, btw!

  • I got my results Friday afternoon. No increased risk and I'm having a boy!

    image

  • I just found out that my insurance this time around doesn't cover the sequential screen.. so we will see if my doctor offers any of those tests. If they do and my insurance covers it, I may go ahead and get one done.
  • Yes, my doc does a pre-screen with the lab to see how much we pay out of pocket. I will be 35 when I deliver so my insurance covered most of it
