Cloth Diapering

Intro, plus of course, a question!

Hello ladies!

I've been doing a bit of lurking, but I'm only 14wks. pregnant, so this all still feels pretty abstract to me.

Anyhoo, we're moving into a new house next month and buying a new washer/dryer.  We know we at least want to CD part-time, so that said, if you could make that purchase knowing full well the diapering laundry ahead, what would you choose?  I'm trying to stay under $1500 total, and while I've heard a lot about how great the old school washers are, water is pretty spendy in this neck of the woods so I'd love to hear about your HE machines! :)

Thanks in advance, and I can't wait to dive in more as the December gets closer!

Re: Intro, plus of course, a question!

  • I love our HE FL for everything except diapers.  I feel like our machine has limited us on which types of diapers we can get.  And it has taken quite a while for us to perfect our wash routine.  Which I still tweak here and there.  That being said I would not trade it for a traditional top loader because of how it performs on the rest of our laundry.  However we have considered getting a cheap used one and hooking it up in our basement.
  • I'm happy with the Whirlpool Duet I get to use when I go home to visit family in the U.S., but I think I've seen a few people mention that they have machines where they can program their whole diaper cycle to run as one program. I don't know which machines have this feature, but if money were no object I would definitely consider it.

  • I have a he tl. I really love it but I don't know how it'll do on diapers. I have the option of setting a programed cycle which I have donefor the diapers. TThere's a rinse and spin cycle but it is only with cold water so I may do the quick wash without detergent for the rinse cycle before the programed cycle.

As for clothes it does a great job. It estimates by weight how much water is required and it gently agitates them. I can put just about anything in there and not haveto worry about them getting torn and ripped apart.

  • I love our machine, especially for washing cloth. It came with our house when we bought it, but the previous owners had recently replaced the washer and dryer, so we lucked out with what we have.

Ours is a couple of years old, so it's a bit different, but this is the same model/style from this year:

The biggest difference with ours is that we don't have the "load size" option to set the water level, ours has an automatic load size sensor, so it automatically adds the right amount, saving money/water. I was a bit nervous about the water level for washing diapers, but it's not like a FL that uses so little water, this still puts in a good amount.

The machine I linked to does have a load size option, so you could always save water/money setting lower load size when you do all your non-CD laundry.

  • I've been happy with how our whirlpool cabrio (HE top load) has performed. I usually do a warm "quick wash" or cold rinse/spin cycle and then use the standard "whites" cycle for the main wash. It automatically does an extra cold rinse.

  • Thank you ladies so much!! So many choices. :)
  • I have a Frigidaire Affinity HE FL that has been great for clothing and diapers. The newer versions of it don't get such great reviews, but wanted to chime in as someone who has always used a FL machine and has not had any problems.

  • I had a fl and I was always worried the diapers weren't getting clean enough. When it broke we got a samsung he tl. I have been very pleased with it. It uses less water but the diapers are actually immersed in the water instead of just swishing through it like with a fl.
