Twin mommas... question!

Are you going to see a high risk OB doc? Are you going to make sure to deliver at a level 3 NICU? Or are you going off who your RE refers you to? I know I'm early, but just trying to plan & I have no idea where to start!

Edit: Or are not all twin pregnancy's high risk? I was just assuming for some reason... I'm askig this bc there are two level 3 NICU hospitals in my area, but both are about 25 miles away. In January, in the snow, could be bad news...

I already had an OBGYN before PG that I'm using and his plan was to have the MFM see me around 18 weeks for the a/s. I had some issues and ended up in the hospital so now I see both my OB and MFM. OB manages my health and MFM does growth scans and biophysical profiles, then they share info. I would definitely suggest seeing a MFM at some point. Depending on the type of twins you have you might need to see a MFM more often. Check out the Multiples board for a wealth of into! There is a FAQ sticky post at the top.

I transferred care to a MFM at a level 3 NICU hospital after the OB I saw asked me how long Id be on lovenox. That made me think she didn't know how to properly care for me. Some MFMs don't deliver anymore (mine does) so you may need an OB and a MFM anyway. I'm also "old" and just felt better with the MFM since it took so many tries to get here..

I have spent so much time worrying about how to get pregnant, that I haven't learned anything about what I do now. Now I know what an MFM is, I can do better research. Thanks!!

I have di-di twins and they both look healthy and are growing on track so my OB has not mentioned seeing any high risk docs. He has privileges to a hospital with the best NICU around but I will only deliver there before 32 weeks or if something comes up.

MFM did not want to take over my care.  I am going to talk to my OB about it Friday at my appt.  My OB has sent me to MFM a few times for ultrasounds but that is not covered under my global copay.  It is a specialist visit.  If my dr wants to transfer me ok but I would rather stay with them.

I asked to be referred to an MFM. I've had procedures done on my cervix (LEEP, colposcopy, polyp removal) and since we're having twins I wanted someone to watch my cervix closely. This has turned out to be a blessing because I HAVE had issues! the MFM also did bloodwork my obgyn didn't do- and discovered that I have a blood clotting disorder. I see both MFM and OBGYN every two weeks. I've been really happy with that level of care. It's a lot of appointments- but I feel more confident that they will catch something before it becomes a problem. And yes, the NICU was very important to me.

I made sure the OB I was going to see was ok working with a MFM , some aren't and/or there can be referral issues. And also having a hospital that has a level 3 nicu was on the top of my list. Theres a hospital about 6 miles from my home but doesn't have a level 3 and if i delivered there and either baby were to have complications they would have to air lift them to a hospital 35 miles away that was in network. So I decided on the level 3 hospital that's 20 miles away. FX it shouldn't be an issue with the drive.

I have been thinking about this too lately.

My current OB/GYN delivers at a hospital with a level II NICU. The OB is in my town, but the hospital is about a half hour away. I would have to commute even further to another OB who delivers at a hospital with a level III NICU. (at least a hour for both new ob and hospital) I will be having winter babies too and last winter was horrible.

I was going to talk to my RE about this and see what he recommends. I am not sure what to do.

I'm just seeing my OB. My twins are di/di and everything looks good so far. If I deliver before 32 wks it has to be at a hospital about an hour away. If after it will be at the other hospital 20 mins away.

My OB doesn't deliver at all. So I will have whoever is there that day. With DS I had a midwife and everything went smoothly.

My OB only involves a MFM if necessary, so far I have not seen one. Which has been really nice since the more doctors you see the more opinions you get and it gets frustrating.

I am for sure delivering at a hospital that has a level 3 NICU because I don't want to risk being sepeeate do from my babies. I transferred OBs to make sure I will deliver at this hospital.

Right now I'm just being seen by my Ob but the practice is very familiar with high risk and multiples. I did make sure that they are OK and are willing to work with a MFM. Recently, we have  moved so I had to find a new Ob. I picked my Ob, after we found out we were having twins and I based it on the NICU level III hospital. The only problem is it is 90 minutes away, but I couldn't bear being separated from these little ones. We are lucky that they will be delivered in the fall. . .if it was the winter I don't know what decision I would have made.

I think all multiple pregnancies are considered high risk.

AFM, My original OB was in a practice with an MFM, and the main office was located at a hospital with a Level 3 NICU. That was complete luck.

Now that we are moving, I am specifically looking at one hospital over another because of the NICU. One has a Level 3, the other has no NICU. If I can get in to a practice with an MFM I would, but I've also had some recommendations for Drs in the area that may not be associated with an MFM. Still deciding on what I'm going to do!

I talked to my RE this morning and he told me to stay with my current ob. (current ob delivers at a hospital with a level 2 nicu) It would be to much driving (45 minutes to a hour) for all my dr appointments and if there was problem they would send me to the other hospital anyway.

I switched OBs to have a doctor with priveledges at a hospital with a level 3 NICU. He has all ultrasounds, cervical checks and growth scans done by the MFM at the hospital, which works out great because they work with him often and know him well. That hospital is about 45 minutes away on back roads (35 on highway) where the local hospital with a level 2 NICU is 5 minutes away from where we live. The level 3 NICU was really important to me and DH and my RE agreed we should use a hospital with a higher level nursery.
