Breastfeeding

bf with pcos question

For those of you with Pcos, did any of you take metformin while trying to breastfeed & if so, did it help your supply? I was on it till 20w but now only get about half of what I need for my twins. I read metformin might help. Anyone have success? Thanks!

Re: bf with pcos question

  • I don't know about metformin.

Have you tried goat's rue? It's in More Milk Plus Special Blend and can help moms with PCOS because it helps to build mammary tissue.

  • I have PCOS and had low supply with my first baby, ended up completely on formula by 5 months.  This time I started taking Goat's Rue in the last month of pregnancy and instantly felt it help my blood sugar/sugar cravings and swings.  I have more than enough milk for new baby.  I love Goat's Rue, though it tastes foul (it's what Metformin was created based off).  I'm also taking Moringa/GoLacta.

  • I guess the important question would be what is causing your low supply?  If you have a notable insulin resistance than I would definitely talk to your doctor about Metformin.  I was doing some research, and (at least from what I read) fenugreek may also help with insulin resistance.  I do not believe it to be as strong as metformin though.

I am fortunate--I have PCOS and having the baby was like some magical reset button.. To get pregnant, and to regulate my cycle I had to take metformin, and took it up till my second trimester.  Now though all my symptoms have decreased, and are hardly noticeable, and I've been fortunate enough not to have any true complications with nursing my LO.. with the exception that I don't pump well and have been needing to supplement while back at work.
