Smell issue and bac out

edited June 2014 in Cloth Diapering
My rar pockets and kissa aio smell a bit after they are dry and I used to use bac out but now don't because my daughter has terrible diaper rashes which seemed to get a touch better when I stopped using it and also because I don't like the new formula. I would just spray bac out on diapers that were gross or very urine smelling.
What would you suggest?

I hot rinse
Hot wash with nellies 2-4 scoops
Extra Rinse with vinegar
Line dry

Re: Smell issue and bac out

  • That seems like a lot of detergent for Nellies?  Maybe detergent build-up problem?  I know ITK uses Nellies...maybe she will chime in.
  • Loading the player...
  • Vinegar? If you have hard water then vinegar compounds the problem

  • And is the first rinse water also spinning out? Otherwise the diapers are being washed in pee/poo water

  • 1. The lady at the cloth diapering store told me to use more detergent because my dipes had a smell after being washed. I was using 2 scoops she said 2.5-4 for a large load.
    2. We have soft water in Boston ma
    3. The 1st rinse is on light wash cycle as my top loader old fashioned doesn't do hot on rinse cycle
    4. Yes all the water comes out. I sit and watch it.

I always feel like I'm struggling how much detergent to use etc
Maybe I should start sep cotton from non?

  • I have a top loader and only use 1 1/2 scoops. 2 if it's a big load.

I always thought you needed to use more detergent for hard water? Can anyone chime in?

  • Usually the first rinse is recommended to be cold or warm.  Most of the people on here have the best luck with an initial warm rinse.

Nellies is a natural detergent, right?  Sometimes people have difficulty getting diapers clean with natural detergents, depending on their water/washer/diaper combo.  Would you consider trying a different detergent?  A lot of people on here use Tide with success.

FYI, awhile back I contacted the Bac-Out company and they told me that the formula was the same, they just started listing the ingredients differently.  So it's the same unless they recently changed it again and I'm unaware.

  • Try boiling your inserts for your pocket diapers. If you have bubbles then you have build up. I do a vinegar rinse also but I do it before the detergent cycle. Also try doing an extra rinse after your last rinse cycle just to make sure everything is out. Seems like a lot of work but if it helps your issues… We had similar problems not to long ago and everything is just trial and error. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the responses I have tried 5 different detergents and finally nellies was working. My daughter has very sensitive skin and also food allergies and bowel issues so I have to be careful what I use etc. maybe the cloth diapering store has led me astray.

You don't need Bac-out. It has enzymes which some babies find irritating. I stopped using Bac-out when we moved abroad since it's difficult to find here, and you know what? We don't miss it. And coincidentally, DS's wetness sensitivity rash cleared up that same month. Just sayin'.

Ditto PPs re adjusting or changing your detergent altogether. Either way, it sounds like something funky has built up on your diapers. Can you describe the smell? Barnyard or ammonia (chemically)?

If you choose to change your detergent, read the labels carefully and avoid anything that has enzymes, since it sounds like they could be a potential irritant for your child.

Could there be buildup in your washer? If you previously used a different detergent, it could be redepositing on your diapers. There's a variety of products out there that you can use to clean your washing machine.

Finally, I recommend that you remove the vinegar from your final rinse. That only serves to acidify your diapers, and it's probably irritating your baby's skin.
