TTC after 35

hello again

I feel as though I need to apologize.  I've commented on this board a few times in the past...but I have been very inconsistent and I haven't been on this board in several months.  The main reason is this- it's hard.  It's hard to talk about, to read about...hard to hope.  I am 43 years old.  I've been married for three years and I am a stepmom to three beautiful kids.  I desperately want a child of my own, but have not had any luck.  I've suffered two miscarriages in the past.  I'm now perimenopausal (based on my elevated FSH) and I have been told by two infertility specialists that donor egg is my only option.  I've tried Femara, Clomid and injectables in the past with no success. I am not a good candidate for IVF.  I have regular cycles and have no symptoms of menopause, so all of this is hard to understand.  It is what it is.  My sweet husband wants us to have a child together, but is not as invested as I am...because he already has three.

I would love to hear from other people that are in a similar situation.  I am at an impasse.  I am open to considering donor egg, although my first hope was to conceive with my own eggs.  My husband is less willing to go that route.  It's expensive and he isn't excited about having a child using a donor egg.

Would love thoughts and input from others with experience with this kind of struggle, if you wouldn't mind sharing.

Thanks so much.

  • Hi there and welcome back. So sorry for your losses. I'm 41 and have been TTC #1 for 2 years with RE assistance. My next step is IVF if this cycle doesn't work out. Regarding DE, I don't have any advice. I think that is a personal decision and up to you. There are quite a few woman on this board that are going this route, so hopefully they will chime in. Best of luck to you and know we are here to support you.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your struggle. I have no advice about DE, if IUI doesn't work and we ever have to think about DE as an option, MH is adamantly against it. I hope your DH can see your point of view. But men can be hard headed sometimes.

Best of luck and big hugs.

Welcome back.  This is a very supportive group.  If you are considering donor eggs or donor embryos you may want to consider posting on the third party reproduction board.  Those ladies have a wealth of information about donor gametes.

  • I also have no real advice, but I wanted to stop by and wish you the very best. Welcome back!
  • Thanks to everyone for the support and good thoughts.

Hooligans4- I'm not a good IVF candidate because no matter what medication they give me (or at what dose), I only produce one egg at a time.  The way they described it is this:  My FSH is already elevated...so my body is already pushing my ovaries to ovulate without medications.  The addition of medications (Clomid, injectables, etc) don't add anything to the mix.  One egg is all I get.  Some cycles, I don't ovulate at all.  Low ovarian reserve.  IVF would be a waste of time and money.  Would be lucky to get one egg, and it would most likely be poor quality.

  • Just wanted to say hello and welcome.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • {{Hugs}} I saw you posted on Third Party board. Those girls are very knowledgeable unlike me lol.

I did 2iui's just for heck of it knowing it wouldn't work then jumped straight to donor eggs. I accepted it right away knowing that this was my only chance for a child. MH is fine with it but more upset about the money we needed to spend. We did do a "shared" cycle to cut costs but I was on the waiting list for a year so that totally sucked. Went to a local clinic. MH said no travel :(

This is a big decision and you both have to be on board. I hope he changes his mind. I am newly pg now after 2 transfers. You also have to remember that even though your using DE it could work on first try or it might take 4 tries. Good luck to you. I hope more ladies chime in over on TPR.

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

    DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!
