Where to find second hand baby clothes?

Hi ladies !

So I have decided to get mostly second hand clothes for the baby as that makes sense both financially and environmentally. Where do I go about finding them ? Goodwill? Some other stores  or websites that you recommend? Really dont want to deal with craigslist as I don't want to drive to strangers' homes to pick clothes up.

Also I feel slightly guilty about this as I just ordered a bunch of maternity shirts for myself on gap and amazon.

Thanks ! I live in MA and there seem to be no once upon a child stores or mom to mom registries here, atleast on a google search. Did find a listing for some consignment stores, might try some of them out one day

  • I have had great success at the Goodwill. You can't beat $1 per item! Some clothes are well worn, but if you have patience, you can score some great stuff.

Once upon a child is nice, but I find it can be overpriced for certain items.

Also, I found that after I had DD, we were overwhelmed with clothing and hand-me-downs.

  • Savers has awesome clothes. Goodwill and Salvation Army are hit-or-miss, but it's totally worth scouting around. If one thrift store is a bust, don't give up. The next time you go, there might be a jackpot. I have an Amvets near me that has supplied almost my entire supply of clothes for this baby, and everything is beautiful and cost a dollar apiece.

I love, love, love buying second-hand stuff for baby. I even feel a little depressed to be given new clothes, because it seems like such a waste. There are just so many adorable, functional, perfectly-conditioned outfits available second-hand. Enjoy the hunt!

  • Definitely frequent a few thrift stores in your area. Most stores restock on tuesdays or wednesdays, so check on those days for new stuff.

Also, check to see if theres a swap n shop group on facebook for your area. I belong to some of them that are near me and theres pretty much always ads for consignment sales.

  • Consignment stores, goodwill, local b/s/t or yardsale sights on FB, actual yardsales, and you could consider craigslist and just always meet at a public location during the day.

  • In my area there are Facebook groups specifically for buying and selling baby items. I personally don't have much luck at baby consignment stores. The ones close to me are overpriced. I have seen great deals at goodwill.
  • I bought all my baby boys clothes from value village (savers), and goodwill. I seriously hit the jackpot some days. All name brand and literally under 3 dollars per item. Tea collection, Nordstrom's, Hanna A, Janie and jack, gap, even have some seven jeans! I love thrift shopping but you have to go a lot. It's not a one time buy all thing.
  • Im a huge fan of buying second hand clothes for kids. They cant wear them very long at all before growing out of them so why spend $$ for them. Also, some stains are not going to be preventable. I have set a limit of $5 per peice of clothing for my DD amd it is not hard to do!

Second what everyone else said about thrift stores, etc.

Also check out Ebay. I saw a lot of baby boy clothes someone was selling. They were all Carters or other good brand and I believe there was about 40 pieces in this one lot they were selling. Thet started the bid at 0.99!!!!! Obviously there were a ton if bids on it and the current bid was around $40 but thats still really good for that many clothes.
  • How can you find mom to mom type things in your area on fb?

  • On FB search for "Your town baby yard sale" or "Your town baby stuff" "Your town baby for sale" --things like that.

I'd also search for annual or semi annual consignment sales.  Whale of a Sale is one that does them in multiple locations, but there are other independent ones.  The one in my town is awesome and everything is half off after noon.  Again, search "Your town children's consignment" and see what you come up with.
  • I'm in MN, so it's the season of garage sales.  I've actually had to stop myself from buying anything else for DS for the summer.  He's totally set.  He's almost a year and a half and gets pretty dirty in a day, so second hand is the way to go.  He has 2-3 "fancy outfits," as DH likes to call them, for weddings, holidays, and church each season, and I rotate them.  These nice clothes are sometimes second hand as well, otherwise, I can always count on the grandmas picking something up that they just couldn't resist.

I also shop Goodwill frequently.  Thursdays at our Goodwill is "kids day" so I think it's an extra 25%-50% off clothes depending on the color of the tag.  If your town has a Target and a Goodwill, Target gives Goodwill their unsold stock at the end of the season, so if you don't mind buying pants and sweatshirts in summer and shorts in the winter, it's a good place to score brand new clothing at second hand prices.

We're finding out the sex on Friday, so after that, I'll be hitting up garage sales again if this LO is a girl.  I never garage shopped until I got pregnant and realized how expensive baby clothes can get for the extremely short period of time they can wear them (DS never fit into NB clothes, and he was only in 0-3 months for 4 weeks!)

  • I am in MA as well and just attended a $5 fill a bag event at the Children's Orchard. I think it only happens a few times a year, but check out their site. I got a bunch of great stuff.

Once upon a child, if they have them near you, is a good place to look. Also look and see if there are any consignment or mom 2 mom sales in your area. We also have some small indepently owned cosigenment kids shops in my area. Just google it.

    Beat me to it... :)

Also Goodwill is a start, and thrift stores--do we even still have those nowadays? Not second hand, but seriously, Ross might be worth at least a look.

  • I'm in MA as well (wow, a lot of us, huh?) I'll have to check out children's orchard. I tried to do a Facebook search for baby stuff in my town but came up with nothing. I'll keep searching around.

  • Not sure where you both are located, but I am in Milford and there is one in the Stop n Shop plaza. Hope that helps!
  • My MIL got several cute things at a garage sale recently.  She got four good quality long sleeved onesies for $1 each.
  • I lovvve goodwill! I have a couple in the super nice areas I frequent. Anything in the 'months' is just $1! I can always find clean name brand stuff when I go.

  • I live in TX and we have a store called kid2kid. There are many of them close to metroplex. I'm not sure how many states they are also in. I stopped by one yesterday and they had some great prices on gently used clothes. Many of them looked new and were $1- $2.99
  • Most of the Moms of Multiples groups have amazing sales.
