Cloth Diapering

Hello! Thinking of switching to CDs....

My DD seems prone to yeast rashes which makes me crazy! I hate seeing her poor tush so red and sore. I also could barf at the amount of money we have (literally) thrown away on disposables.

One huge annoyance we have is any car ride longer that 45 minutes, A pees through her diaper (out the side, diaper isn't full and we always start with a new dry diaper). She is currently in Huggies little movers size 5 and she is only 22 pounds.

This is why I am thinking of CD. Is it crazy to switch at 15 months???

What do you recommend (brands, supplies) for a taller, skinnier girl? She also pees like a racehorse!!!

Thanks ladies!

(I'll also be stalking the board to learn more!)

Re: Hello! Thinking of switching to CDs....

  • Not crazy at all. My daughter was taking in a crazy amount of liquids between 9 and 18 months.

My daughter was on the skinnier side, but not tall. If you would like to try cloth I'd recommend getting a few different types. That way you can find a good fit.

You also will want to check out the FAQs above for more information.

  • Yes, leaks! The nice thing about cloth is you can adjust the absorbency for your needs. I started out with BumGenius pockets but now I've got everything and could care less about pockets. Prefolds and covers are my go to, super absorbent and if I've got a good (Blueberry Coverall) cover on my son, he's soaked the prefold entirely and we've not had leaks. Pretty impressive!

I don't think it's crazy to switch at 15 months, but I don't think you'll find anyone on this board who does ;). Just think, you can sell cloth diapers when you're done with them. Can't do that with disposables!

@StrawberryDreams219‌ I know according to the weight range she is in a big diaper, but 3s, even 4s, do not fit her right! Even if they did fit, she pees too much for a 3 to keep up! I think she has a long rise and that is part of our fit problem.

We always went up a size when she would start leaking at night, which is super, super rare.

Kuddos on making your own diapers! That is very cool, but sadly I am no where near crafty enough to attempt that, lol!

  • Some of the CD vendors will offer diaper trials, so that's probably the best way to find out what style and brands will fit your child best. Jillian's Drawers offers a nice variety in their trial, but I believe there are others that will let you customize what is in your trial so that you can be very specific about what you get.

A couple of thoughts since you mention your daughter being prone to yeast rash:

Hopefully with frequent changes and the breathability of CDs you can avoid the conditions which would encourage yeast. It sounds like she wets a lot so you may find that she needs to be changed more frequently than with disposables.

If she gets an infection while in CDs you will need to disinfect your diapers and continue to do so while she is being treated for the infection. There are a few people here who have experience with this. Some use bleach, others will use a combination of TTO and GSE.

Prefolds or flats + covers would be easiest to disinfect if you have a sanitize setting on your washer, since diapers that are 100% natural fibers can stand up to high heat. Fitteds, pockets and AIOs have elastic and PUL which would not stand up well to high heat (hence bleach or essential oils to disinfect).
  • Never too late! I think flats and covers are the easiest for tackling yeast rashes. Plus they are cheap!

But if yeast is an ongoing issue you may look at her diet, adding yogurt or a probiotic may help.

  • I second the diaper trial idea.  At this age, you're not only figuring out what works best to prevent leaks but what's going to work best with your child's personality.  For instance you might look for a diaper that's quick to change in and out of if she doesn't like cooperating during changes or you might look for one that's difficult for her to take off herself.  There's a few more variables with an older child.  But it's definitely not crazy to switch now.  Especially if you plan on reselling or having more children.

Also, the peeing out the side of the disposables before they're full sounds like a fit issue.  Have you tried other brands?  Do the Huggies gap at the legs when she's in the sitting position?

@stoneycakes‌ the Huggies seem to fit quite well. They are snug all around her leg, I 'fluff' the gussets out also.

I have been lazy about trying other diapers.... Luvs and pampers seem to be so strongly scented that I don't even want to use them. I tried the snug and dry and the diaper stuck to her skin, which I was not happy about.

I just ordered some bummis cellulose liners and Joey bunz premium inserts. We don't have a cloth diaper store around, so I am going to go to BBB and look at what they have. I know I want to try the BG 4.0.

BGs are good diapers...but if you have a kid who's a peeing machine that leaks out of sposies (I did, so this is speaking from experience) I would not stuff a 4.0 with the inserts it comes with. Get some flats and stuff with one flat and one of the Joey Bunz. For daytime.

For absorbency, plain old prefolds and covers can't be beat. The natural fibers of prefolds are much better at absorbing liquid quickly than a pocket diaper with a synthetic lining. Sometimes DD would get leaks in a pocket diaper because she peed too fast for the diaper to absorb. Size medium GMDs (www.greenmountaindiapers.com) in cotton or bamboo (or both!) would be a great place to start. Do not buy 'prefolds' at a big box store, though. They are not good for diapering even though the package says 'diapers'.

    Good luck!

@Aurora_Borealis‌ thank you do much! What cover worked best for you with the prefolds?

Do you thinking stuffing the 4.0 with a Joey bunz premium and the insert it came with would be ok?

What worked best at night for you? My dd sleeps 11 hours and I don't want to break that routine!

  • I like my blueberry capris and BG flips as covers for flats/prefolds. I just padfold them like inserts and stick them in the flaps, I don't mess around with other folds.

If your kid is a super wetter I would just stay away from MF entirely. Flats are very inexpensive and will be worlds better. They also have flour sack towels (FSTs) at Walmart in five packs for $5 that work just as well as a flat for padfolding. Plus another perk besides the great absorbency (and getting less compression leaks than MF) is that they wash up extremely easily.

Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
    It all revolves around you.
  • ITK is right - with a heavy wetter microfiber is NOT going to be your friend.

For overnight I wouldn't use a pocket diaper at all, even stuffed with something other than microfiber. Try PF + hemp + cover and see if that works. It might not. For months I had to use a crazy huge Twinkie Tush Night Night fitted plus a Joeybunz hemp all under a wool cover for DD and the thing would still be soaked in the morning.

As far as covers, I like Thirsties Duo size 2, Diaper Safari OS and Blueberry Coveralls.

Also though you asked about cloth, I wanted to add that size 5 Huggies Little Movers gap at DD's chubster thighs when she sits and she is nearly 35 lbs. While the Little Movers were my favorite sposie in sizes 3 & 4, even Walgreens store brand diapers are fitting her better in size 5. So it may be worth a shot to try something else while you're making your decisions about which cloth to get.

  • Hello from another March 2013 mama. Another idea is to use cotton receiving blankets as flats. They were how I figured out how easy flats were to use.
