Thinking of trying CDing-any tips or advice?

edited June 2014 in Success after IF
So, A seems prone to yeast rashes which makes me crazy! I hate seeing her poor tush so red and sore. I also could barf at the amount of money we have (literally) thrown away on disposables.

One huge annoyance we have is any car ride longer that 45 minutes, A pees through her diaper. She is currently in Huggies little movers size 5 and she is only 22 pounds.

This is why I am thinking of CD. Is it crazy to switch at 15 months???

I am going to stalk the CD board, but where do I start!?!

What do you recommend (brands, supplies) for a taller, skinnier girl? She also pees like a racehorse!!!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Thinking of trying CDing-any tips or advice?

  • I would suggest a pocket diaper like a BG 4.0 stuffed with a prefold for a heavy wetter. I like green mountain prefolds. Yeast is a problem with CDs though. It's hard to get rid of yeast if your CDs get "infected".

    1) Doooooo ittttttt! Come on over to the cd board, we have all kinds of awesome advice!

    2) if she is prone to yeast, I'd go with either BG's or natural fibers so you can bleach if needed with no worries. Fitteds (gmd, sbish, Twinkie tush) with covers might be your best bet for a heavy wetter.

    3) do you have her on a probiotic?

Hmm. My pedi had us start probiotics before she was 1 bc we kept getting thrush then yeast rash. So annoying! And painful for her! I'd definitely ask again. Does she eat yogurt?

Yes-she loves yogurt! The full blown yeast rashes seem to have slowed way down since we learned about baking soda in the tub! I get so paranoid that everytime she gets a blotchy or early rashy looking butt, I put Lotramin or nystatin on her, and I don't love putting meds on her frequently either!

I just watched the 7 part YouTube cloth diapering 101-I'm so excited to give this a try!

I'm thinking the bg 4.0 looks good with some arrangement of fleece and hemp. At night she usually goes 10.5-11.5 hours in her diaper now and it's SOAKED!

I typically use pockets or all-in-ones during the day.  But, for over night we use Flip covers with two of their inserts (usually an organic overnight and a stay dry; sometimes we use a stay dry and a hemp doubler).  Before we went to this option my daughter leaked overnight all the time.  The other good thing about the flips are that the inserts can easily be bleached if you end up with yeast issues without having to risk hurting the PUL.  IF you have a CD store near you, I would go and look at a few options and try a few different diapers to see what works for you.

Also, you can buy micro fleece pretty cheap and cut it to use as liners.  We do this so that we can still use the non-cloth diaper safe diaper creams as needed.

  • From a totally different perspective here -

I gave up CDing after 18 months.  I was just tired.of.it.  SO tired of it.  If M were close to being PT'd, I would have just pushed on, but he is showing no signs of being interested in PT, so a couple of weeks ago I told DH I'm done with CDing and I sold my stash on CL.  I couldn't see myself CDing for another 9-12 months until he's PT'd.  Don't miss it one bit.

I honestly don't know if CD will help with the yeast, and just beware that it's going to be a major PITA if you get yeast in your CDs.  And you cannot use the regular diaper cream/paste with CDs.  When M was a newborn he had a few bouts of yeast (he had to take an antibiotic for the 1st 2 weeks of life due to a medical issue).  I actually had to use disposables during that time so I wouldn't keep getting the CDs reinfected.  (also, his butt was so red that the only paste that worked wasn't CD safe either.)

I didn't like CDing b/c I hate the laundry.  I wash every 3 days.  When you add in laundry for our clothes, towels etc, that's basically a load of laundry every.single.day.  After doing it for over a year, I'm just tired of it.

I didn't like CDing b/c M pees a lot so I have to double stuff his pockets (we used mostly BG).  That makes the pockets bulky and a lot of times I can't get pants that fit him.  If the pants fit over his bulky diaper, they are too lose at the waist, +/- too long.

I didn't like CDing b/c now that M is much more active (climbing up/down, running around), the CDs just don't seem to stay on as well.

Even with the double-stuffed CD, M will leak through one in 90 minutes, whereas the disposables he can wear for at least a couple of hours without issue.  I don't think we ever had a leak with disposables (except overnight ones when we had him in a smaller size).

Anyway, just my 1 person point of view.  I know most people who CD like it but I just wasn't one of them.

  • I definitely suggest giving it a try! I have no experience with dealing with yeast issues and diaper rashes b/c we've never really had either over here. Once in a while he will get a little red around his bum, and I use a natural cream, also I use flushable liners in the diapers - therefore the cream doesn't damage the fabrics.

My fave brands are BGs, SoftBums and I've had good luck with Rump-a-Roos for overnight. We rarely have leaks!

  • I CD, but I use a diaper service. I've never dealt with yeast with my sons or now with DD.

I love the diaper service. I don't have to rinse out the diapers or anything, everything goes into the diaper pail. Everything. Sure it gets a little stinky in the summer months when the pee is heat activated, but I don't have to wash them so it is worth the trade off. :)

  • Just a thought, if you aren't sure whether CDing is for you, starting with a diaper service might be a good idea. Then you don't have a huge initial investment in prefolds, just buy a few snapped covers.

    Thank ladies!

We have no CD service even remotely close to us; not even a CD store :(

I ordered some stuff on amazon last night and I'm going to look around BBB and see what they have, as I have never paid attention!
