I'm in my 7th month of pregnancy but have started looking into what kind
of diapers I want use. I've been reading all about the hybrid type
diapers and loved the idea behind gDiapers. I would love to stay as
Eco-Friendly as I can but don't want the cost of diapering my baby eat
me out of house and home.
I like the idea of being able to do a
cross between a disposable and cloth diper with the gDiaper, also
willing to deal with the high cost at the start. What I would like to
know is if any of you gDiaper users have good tips on helping keep the
price down while using them?
I've posted this on 0-3 moths message board and have been told of diaper sampler packs? Anyone know of anything that I should know about cloth diapering as well?
Re: I'm thinking about using gDiapers, yet I'm just looking for other info on cloth diapering?
I know it's a bigger up front cost, but unless you buy all.the.diapers, you will save by doing cloth over disposable.
Prefolds or flats and covers are the cheapest option out there.

Best Bottoms, Flips, Grovia, and SoftBums are all hybrid/AI2 systems that are One Size. That means they will fit from around 3-8 weeks through 35-40 pounds. I think both Grovia and Flip have disposable insert options.
You can also make your own AI2 system by getting 6-8 covers and 24-36 flats or prefolds. In the early days it's recommended to secure prefolds and flats with pins, boingos, or a snappier because NB poo is crazy runny and a secured diaper just holds it in better and gives you a chance of reusing a cover. Once LO stops pooping all the time you can just fold the flat/prefold into a rectangle and lay in a cover. Easy Peasy.
A bonus to flats is they can be used from birth to potty learning. You just buy different covers as baby grows. Prefolds come in different sizes so you'd have to buy more of those as baby grows, but they are still very economical at $1.50-$3 a piece.
Overall, we were happy with the gCloth system but it does take a little more effort than even stuffing a pocket. We used the disposable inserts occasionally, but going with the cloth inserts was a better cost savings. And I use the gCloth inserts to stuff pockets and lay in covers.
If I could do it again, I'd vary my stash a bit and have some Best Bottoms and Grovias mixed in.
