coughs after drinking water from sippy

My 20m old frequently (about half the time) coughs after drinking water from a sippy cup. I have tried different style tops and having the water cold vs room temp. Doesn't make a difference. He also has been using a sippy regularly since at least 12m, so it's not like he's just learning. Anyone else's kid do this? He has no trouble with foods of any sort.

He hardly ever (almost never coughs) when I help him drink from a regular cup, probably because I am controlling the flow with smaller sips, one sip at a time.

  • DS does this some too.  I just figure he's trying to drink to fast and it's making him cough.  I've never worried about it.

  • My LO does this too but only with water. She drinks juice and she doesn't cough nor makes faces but all of a sudden she gets a sip of water she starts to cough. I know she does it on purpose because she laughs afterwards lol
  • Same for us here too! When she starts coughing I always say "slow down sister" :)
