Poll time! Feeding/changing order.

My LO screams nearly every time we change his diaper. I've been changing him, then nursing him to calm his screams down, but now I'm a little worried that I'm not doing things in the "right" order. I did try nursing, then changing, and he cried for 10 long minutes afterwards. Is there a good order to do things? Or do you know why he hates being changed? Just wondering what you all do!

  • I also struggle with this as LO poops after I feed her but I try to change in between breasts as to get her back to sleep. It's definitely a struggle trying to figure out which to do because I don't want to change her twice in the same feeding but also don't want to wake her up! The wipe warmer has helped a little...

She poops while I'm feeding her so I wait until after feeding.
  • I feed, change, feed.

  • Change, feed, change
  • Typically I change between sides of nursing to keep him awake, but also to prevent making him mad right before trying to put him back down

I'm in the feed, change, feed camp with @kittenslove and @Rosebud2587‌

  • Another feed change feed. Helps wake him up after the first feed but the second feed calms him back down because he gets really worked up during diaper changes.
  • We also feed, change, feed. LO hates to be naked so second feed calms him down. PS there is no RIGHT answer. Whatever works for you and LO is the right answer!

  • During the day, I feed then change her to help her stay awake longer. At night, I change and then feed since she usually passes out right after eating.

  • I usually change then feed, only because I want LO to be more awake. Sometimes it's feed change feed. It totally depends on how awake or fussy he is, though.

  • Feed change feed as well. He poops often on his first round, so I burp halfway through, change, then feed again.

  • Is he cold? My little guy screams when we change him too, and DH figured out that if we keep a blanket draped over his chest and arms he calms down.
  • I feed, change, feed.

    Same!
  • I'm also on Team feed, change, feed. My LO falls asleep during feedings so changing her half way through helps keep her awake enough for the second side.

  • Depends how wet she is. Lil bit we wait soaked we change before. Now today it was in the middle cuz she had a blow out all over her and me. So we had a bath in the middle of feeding today!!
  • Change if needed, feed, change if needed, feed to sleep.

  • Thanks for all the input!  I'm so relieved to know that everyone has their own way, and that there's no perfectly right way.  It's really hard to get DS to detach when feeding, so I don't think we could do feed, change, feed... but I'll keep it in mind!

  • I feed on one side, change her, and then feed on the other side
  • Usually we change first, because after eating she often sleeps. We don't change first if she doesn't need it, or it's really inconvenient (i.e. we're out), or it's a desperate situation (she's already screaming). Also, I only feed on one side at a time, so there's no obvious break in the feeding.

Same! Makes Rose mad enough to nurse longer and eat more :)

I don't think these a perfectly right way to do anything regarding a baby!

  • Nurse, change, nurse :)
  • For this LO seems as though a change, then feeding, then one more changes works best. He often takes a little poo right after or during feeding!
I think it all depends on the baby.

Depend- if I need to wake them up a bit I will change first but we normally do it after. They'll typically have wet diapers after feeding.

Eta: and doing the change after feeding often saves all of us from the diaper change 30 minutes after they go down after a feeding.

  • Nola poops after every feeding it seems, so I wait until after the feed to change her.
  • I consider the fact that newborns hate being changed to be a happy coincidence that helps out with the first few days of nursing.  If you have trouble keeping baby awake enough to nurse, changing their diaper will rile them up enough to help get a good feeding in.  Therefore, I always change, then nurse.
