TTC after 35

Timing of HSG?

My OB gave me an order for as HSG, which I want to get as soon as I can.  Apparently I can just show up at the hospital whenever, and they'll do it.  Based on AF and my schedule this week and weekend, the possibilities are Friday (which will be CD 6), and Monday (CD 9).  I almost always ovulate on CD 14 (never earlier than CD 13, which only happened once), and DH and I plan to start our FW activities on CD 11.

So, which day do you think would be better for the HSG?  Is it bad to do it too close to the end of AF?  Is it likely that there will be enough continuing discomfort that I'll want to abstain from sex for a day or two afterwards?

Also, about how long does the process take?  I'm hoping to get in early in the morning and be in to work at around my usual time.   (Yes, this means nothing stronger than ibufrofen for me, so I hope it doesn't hurt too much!)  Is this realistic?

Re: Timing of HSG?

  • I would go for CD 9, but I think either would be fine. My RE wanted me to schedule mine between CD 9 and CD 12, and I went in on CD 9. They didn't say I should abstain from certain activities afterwards, and I forgot to ask, so to be safe I waited a coupe of days, so I would think there wouldn't be problems with CD 11 activities.

The process was very quick for me, they said 15 minutes, but I think I was on the table for 5. I was very nervous about how I'd feel after and whether I'd be up for returning to work, but I had no problems going back and only had minor cramping (I took 3 Advil 30 minutes before as instructed). You should wear a pad after, though b/c I had minor spotting (probably could've gotten away with just a liner) and the dye they use is expected to leak out a little afterwards (I didn't really notice since it's clear).

Good luck, and I hope it's quick and painless for you!

The HSG can be either a breeze or very painful, depending on the skill of the doctor involved and whether there are any tube blockages. If there is a blockage, the doctor will push extra contrast to try and break through, which I've heard can really hurt.

In my case, I took 800 mg ibuprofen and 2 mg Valium half an hour before the HSG. The procedure itself was fairly painful - they used a small clamp on my cervix (*shudder*) and the doctor used a lot of dye which contributed to my uterus feeling distended. I felt uncomfortable afterwards, and then had what felt like severe menstrual cramps for about a day and had to call out of work. There was also a fair amount of bleeding and dye leakage.

I would do it on CD6, both to get it over with, and so you have the weekend to rest if you cramp up. I definitely didn't feel amorous for a few days after getting it done. In fact, I asked DH if I could clamp his junk for a minute, to give me a sense of justice.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....
  • I was told that you cannot be bleeding AT ALL when you have HSG. And we weren't told not to have sex, we just waited because I had what seemed like a period almost immediately afterward. I don't think this is the norm though.

    Good luck!

My RE wanted mine in the first ten days, because he wants to ensure you aren't pregnant. Other than that,no restrictions. Mine was painless and we were able to bd the next day just fine.
  • I don't have any advice, but I just want to say that I hope that you get some answers soon.

  • Thanks for the advice (and support)!

I think if I'm absolutely sure there's no bleeding by Friday, I'll try to do it then (so I can try again Monday if they can't for some reason).

    Good times, good times...

Yes, as PP stated I was told you cannot bleed at all. And being the why person that I am I asked my RE. He stated because you don't want blood introduced outside of the uterine cavity.

    Good luck with your HSG!
