C-sections

Intro/Happy to have found this board

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to say that I'm happy to have found this board.  I am possibly going to get a C-section for this LO.  My placenta is low (currently 1.3cm from cervix) and baby is breech.  I know it is early days, but I want to start doing my research in the event that one (or both) of these issues don't resolve themselves.

My situation is a bit complicated because I am being followed by midwives who I know will want me to exhaust all possible options (ex. turn the baby) before opting for a C-section (where I will no longer be under their care).  DS' was delivered vaginally under traumatic circumstances.  He was late (41.5 weeks) and when my water broke there was so much meconium I was told (afterwards) it looked like adult diarrhea.  I couldn't push him out on my own so a vacuum was used.  He was left with neurological trauma from that, as well as serious respiratory issues from the meconium.  He was in the NICU for 2 weeks and it was very serious.  I didn't even get to hold him until he was 6 days old.  Thankfully he is in great health today.

So all that to say, deep down I think I would prefer a C-section rather than try for another vaginal delivery.  I'm a pretty confident person, but I just don't think my body can have a successful vaginal delivery.

I guess I'll just play it by ear for the next month or so to see what happens.  I know a C-section isn't a walk in the park, but neither was my delivery and aftermath.  I feel like I want to trust this LO and follow her lead.  If my placenta moves and she turns head-down, then I think it's a sign that I should try for vaginal.  If not, I think it's a sign that a C-section is the way for us to go.

Looking forward to reading all the posts and getting to know some of you.

  • I had a vaginal birth with my first, and ended up with CS with #2 & 3. To me, the CS and the rough vaginal (I had a retained placenta and needed an emergency D&C right after birth) were basically equal. GL for a healthy baby and delivery regardless as to how she's born.

  • I had a c section with my first due to failure to progress. Perhaps I'm very lucky, but I felt like the c section was pretty easy. The surgery was in the evening and they had me up and walking the next day. I asked the doctor tsend me home a day early after he said everything was fine. I stopped taking the Percoset early because it has weird side affects and the prescription Ibuprofen did the trick. I stopped taking that sometime in the first couple weeks. I was too busy taking care of my newborn and sleeping to notice if there was any mild discomforts beyond that. I think birth in general, regardless of method, is far from a walk in the park...

  • I'm also trying to decide if I want to go ahead and schedule the next one or try for VBAC but at this point I don't really know of any convincing benefit to try to for VBAC.

  • I also have a low placenta it's about 1.5 cm away, it had been complete until my last u/s at almost 36 weeks. I've continued to see my home birth midwife as well as a high risk OB since the diagnosis. I was really excited to try a vaginal birth at the hospital when we found out it went from complete to low lying and then I had two bleeding episodes and am currently on bed rest at the hospital. Our midwife has been so supportive and stuck with us throughout the whole thing and will be at our c-section on Friday morning.

It's great that you are already comfortable with a c-section. I'm still processing it all and I'm sure will have some mourning for the loss of the home birth I envisioned. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, I hope both issues resolve themselves for you.

Pretty much the same as this poster.  I will have RCS on July 31st.
