Trouble TTC

To switch or not to switch (RE)...

We were with my OB for 6-8 months then switched to a RE the past 4 months. We chose him based on a recommendation. DH says he's never been 100% confident in him and I'm starting to agree (among other concerns I've had, I think IUI#1 was timed poorly based on my medhx). It's clear that if you are unhappy, don't stay there.. The thing is we are moving out of state in 7 weeks. So now the question is: 1) stay with him for another cycle of inject/IUI (most reasonable) 2) attempt to switch (could we get started with someone new this week so we don't miss this cycle?) 3) natural cycles until we move and likely while we get settled (least desirable because that hasn't worked in 2+yrs! Haha) 4) I love lists.

Are you paying for this OOP or is insurance covered? If insurance covers it, I would almost stay to stick with him for another cycle since you will be moving in less than two months. I would hate to see 3 RE's in a 4 month window, but that's just me. Also, are you unexplained?

  • Yes, unexplained. We are fortunate that insurance (self insured) is picking up a portion of it. I agree about switching, I already feel like a pinball bouncing around with this move coming up :(

  • You could call another RE and find out the process of getting an appointment with them and confirm that they will be good with getting your medical records and reviewing them prior to you first appointment with them. There is the chance that they are going to want to run their own series of tests and would bench you for a month to get the tests done and review them, etc. Perhaps there is a process where you could get in with another RE that would have a referral to were you are relocating to and would be willing to call in their findings, etc like mine did with my OB so once you get moved its a smooth transition and your already on track! IE..it couldn't hurt to call a new RE where you are and at least ask the questions!

  • I would not bother switching to a new RE if I was going to have to switch again soon. Whether you take a break or do another medicated cycle in the meantime us up to you! I can see why you wouldn't want to take a break, I'd feel the same way.

FWIW, I felt like the first cycle with my RE was more about learning how I react to meds then actually getting pregnant. With the second cycle, I felt like we improved a lot, so I felt comfortable staying, even though the first wasn't ideal. So, I think that might be a fairly normal experience.

  • Yikes, this is a tricky situation because of the moving timeline. If it was me I would probably call ahead and get all my info set up with the new RE as much as possible (the one where you are moving to) and find out what is needed and when you can start. If they are on board then maybe you can take a break while the moving process is happening and be all set to hit the ground running with your new RE as soon as you get there. If you are uncomfortable with the RE you have now it may be best to just let this cycle pass so you're not dealing with the IF mind games and a big move at the same time. Best of luck on everything! :)

Trying to have baby #1 since April 2013

DH SA March,May 2014 - Low motility and shape issues. On vitamins per RE to help

Me testing April 3, 2014 - FSH and LH good, HSG showed blocked right tube

April 29, 2014 - First RE appt., right tube needs to be removed and possibly left also if

it's bad too. RE suggests going straight to IVF

June 4, 2014 - LAP/HSC and unexpected endo. removed but tubes got to stay!

June 13, 2014 - Post-Op appointment. We decide where to go next since main issue

is MFI influenced. Trying naturally until decision... Repeat SA  in September. Aiming for IUI #1 November 2014.

  • Initially I was going to tell
you to absolutely make the switch if you are having doubts. I just had an appointment with my NEW RE and it was the best appointment and decision I have made.
But, since you are moving and going to have to make the switch anyways I would wait it out! If you feel like your RE is just wasting your time...save your money, take a cycle or 2 off...and get started with you're new RE as soon as you can! Good luck!

Yeah, I would not switch just for one cycle. I would either give Dr. Unconfident one more shot or just do natural until the move. If I did the natural option, I would start getting the paperwork and everything rolling before the move, that way you don't loose too much time when you get settled.

  • Thank you guys for your advice! I'm researching some offices in S. Fl and will get as much leg work done now like y'all suggested. If anyone has any moving tips or RE suggestions for that area, please share! :)

05/2013 – first appt with OB about IF

    10/2013 – 50 mg Clomid #1 + TI

    11/2013 – 50 mg Clomid #2 + TI

    12/2013 – 50 mg Clomid #3 + Ovidrel + TI

Consider IUI with OB or move to RE

03/2014 – first appt with RE, hysterosalpingogram good

04/2014 – Letrozole; Novarel + IUI CANCELLED, follies resorbing

    05/2014 – Menopur + Novarel + IUI#1

    06/2014 – Menopur + Novarel + IUI#2

    07/2014 - Break for traveling

    08/2014 - Break for moving

  • I would not switch REs at this point. I'd just hope for the best on timing and one more IUI with that office before moving, since it's partially covered and you say you'd hate to waste a cycle on TI.  Good luck, hope you never need to meet an RE in your new city!

Yeah I wouldn't bother switching since you'll be moving and having to start over. I would take a break and try naturally. Good luck with the move!
