colostrum? (poss. TMI)

Hi ladies,

I'm 36W 3D, a FTM, and yesterday I noticed something that looked like tiny bits of hard white-ish eye gunk on my nipple...is this colostrum? I heard of many women getting colostrum during their pregnancy but it was always mentioned as something slightly stickier and thicker than breast milk, but this was actually teeny tiny hard pieces, is that how it starts?

Re: colostrum? (poss. TMI)

  • If mine leaks (like when I'm sleeping), it'll dry on my nipples and I'll wake up with little hard pieces. Is that what you're referring to? It's normal.

I didn't notice it after waking up but after coming back home from a shopping spree...never felt a leak...you'd normally feel the discharge as it comes out or no?

I suppose it is colostrum can't think of anything else
    :-??

  • My nips get a little cruddy after a day's work. I don't feel anything leaking but when I go take a shower it comes off. Just rub the tips of your nips with a towel when drying off and it'll all come out.

    And yes - it's colostrum.

for some reason I thought that colostrum was a liquid substance that oozes out non stop once it comes and you can feel the oozing out happening...apparently am wrong

but is it the same with milk when it comes? its something that keeps oozing out and you can feel it? or does it just happen when you have a let down only...a FTM

I never felt it when I leaked while pregnant, just noticed the stain in my bra. Milk doesn't ooze out either, it just drips. I never feel that leaking either, just see the wet spots. Your nipples need to be stimulated in order for it to come out in significant quantities.

  • My nipples have been leaking colostrum for weeks now (yellow, no doubt about it).

  • Meh, no thanks.  I've got better things to do than collect milliliters of colostrum.

you think that now.. that shit is GOLD. Lots of moms stress out about not having enough in the beginning. I wish I would have been leaking some before giving birth so I could have saved it!
  • I've had a baby before.  I feel I am in a good position to be able to adequately measure the value of my bodily secretions and personal time, thank you very much.

Since a few wks ago, I've gotten to the point where I actually need to squeeze out my boobs (maybe a tablespoon in each) over the sink before bed every night because they are sore from having too much extra liquid in them. I still am many wks away from having a baby to feed!

Super weird! Though seems like most things in pregnancy are super weird ("natural" not so much).

No, it is just discharge. Colostrum is not produced until after birth in humans (it may show up a few hours in advance, but given she's not 37 weeks yet, that isn't something to hope for). Colostrum is also yellow, not white.

Colostrum can be produced before the baby is born and that has been happening to me as well. Every doctor I've spoken to and every baby book I have read said it can show up even before 35 weeks sometimes. Wikipedia is not a legitiment cite to use for research.....

  • I'm almost 36 weeks and have had the dry stuff you describe, plus small amounts of clear "discharge" if I lean on my boobs or squeeze them since 24-ish weeks.  My OB said it was colostrum, but it's pretty clear, not yellow.

  • I will go ahead and say yes it is colostrum. i have been leaking it for a while now! the only time i would feel a leakage is if i was laying on my side / squashing my boob and it leaked enough to soak through my top. otherwise , i didn't notice and come shower time i had like crusty nipples ( lol at the name) it is sticky but you will need to catch a good drop on your fingers to figure that out ha ha
