Cloth Diapering

Intro and question about BG AIO leaking

Hi,

This is my first post here, but I have been lurking and have gotten some really good info from the posts here.  A little about me, my son is almost 15 weeks old.  We cloth diaper 90% of the time.  I have been using a combination of pockets, prefolds, and AIO.

We primarily use BG AIO at night and have for the last two months. However the last week they have leaked multiple nights.  My baby is probably close to 16lbs, if not over, so I adjusted the snaps to the bigger size and they still leaked.  I have not had any issues prior to this week, so I'm not sure what is happening.  Is it possible he is in between sizes?  I really like the AIO and want to keep using them at night.  Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem or has any trouble shooting advice.  Thank you!

Which AIO? Freetime or elemental? Is it soaked when it leaks? If you lift his legs after you out the diaper on, are there gaps? What's your wash routine?

  • I would be very surprised if a bg aio went all night without leaking. You probably need more absorbency.

We can use a Freetime overnight and E is almost 2. So it's possible. That why I'm asking more questions.

It's obviously possibly but I agree that the most likely problem is simply that the absorbency has been outgrown.

I still disagree. And think we would be doing OP a disservice by saying "yep, you need new diapers." If it could be something else, that's worth exploring. Her LO is only 15 weeks, not a toddler.

  • 15 weeks is right around when we had to switch to fitteds overnight. I just think that's the most likely culprit.

  • Thanks for the responses.  They are freetime. I wash every 2-3 days according to the package directions.  One of the diapers is new (had been washed once) and it leaked the first time we used it.

He does wear them all night, about ten hours, which I know is a long time.  He was sleeping the same amount a couple of weeks ago and they weren't leaking.  I was wondering if I just did need something more absorbent, but they don't seem soaked all the way through.  They seem to be leaking out the back.  I haven't noticed any gaps but I'll be sure to check the next time I put one on.

Could it just be that he's bigger now, they aren't going to be as absorbent?  Does anyone have any recommendation for a good cloth diaper for nighttime?

If they aren't soaked, it isn't an absorbency issue. Maybe a fit issue?

  • I kind of feel like it's a fit issue.  I just put one on.  On the smallest size snaps, it comes down really low in the back and doesn't seem to fully cover him.  On the next size up there is a gap in the back, even when it's put on as tight as I can get, if that makes sense.  I almost feel like he's in between sizes.

I really like the AIO and have been happy with them.  It just seems like all of a sudden they started leaking.

Unfortunately a lot of people do have that issue with BGs. They will fit great, then not, then for great again. So yes, it's possible he's "between sizes" or just not getting a good fit in BGs right now.
Fitteds with covers are really popular as an overnight solution. I really like best bottoms with a doubler and a cotton/hemp insert. But BBs run small and E isn't a heavy wetter, so they might not work for everyone.

Oh, and don't forget you can do the snaps off center, like tighter on the top snap and looser on the bottom snap. That might get you a more customized fit.

  • Diaper rite bamboo fitteds are a nice cheap thing to try. Or even a snappied prefold with a doubler if necessary. I think fitteds are a good investment because it just nice to have something really bulletproof for overnight.

  • I will play around with the snaps.  Didn't even think of that!  Last night we just did a disposable because I didn't want to risk another leak.

Thanks for the suggestions on other options.  It would be really nice to have something really solid for nighttime.
