RLR or new inserts or something else?

We have been cd for 11 months. We use pockets with mf inserts and sposies at night. Lately I have noticed that the mf inserts have a weird smell out of the dryer. They smell fine out of the washer and the shells are fine. We wash every 2-3 days with tide, warm rinse, hot wash, cold rinse. Line dry the shells and toss the inserts in the dryer. It's not an ammonia smell or barnyard. It's something else. We are on a well with hard water but we do has a softener. I have tried TTO and bleach because I have it on hand. It helped for a time or 2 but then it was back. Do I need to do an RLR strip or do I likely just have old mf that needs to go?? Any other suggestions?

Re: RLR or new inserts or something else?

  • Just wondering, if you line dry the inserts, do they still have the smell?

  • I'm not sure actually. I'll do that tomorrow. It's not a strong smell but I notice it mainly when I pull them out and they're warm. None of my other laundry is affected.

An RLR or even washing soda strip certainly won't hurt. I think I'd give it a try before getting new inserts.

Unless of course you want new. Then buy.all.the.inserts!! :D

  • @CLLDLL‌ what's the process for a washing soda strip? I have some of that sitting around.

Fill your washer (or laundry sink/bathtub half way) with warm water. Add 1/4 cup or less of washing soda and dissolve. You know you used the right amount if the water is cloudy.

Soak anything with PUL or elastic for no more than and hour. Everything else for 2-4 hours. Then rinse rinse rinse.
