Trying to Get Pregnant

Withdrawal from birth control?

My husband and I just celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary and we have now decide that we would like to start trying for a baby. This is my first month without birth control (the nuva ring) and I have been experiencing some weird symptoms. Around the middle of this first month ( when I can best calculate that I would be ovulating) my husband and I have had sex numerous times. Roughly a few days after when I think that I ovulated I began experiencing cramps (similar to pre-mentral cramps), nausea and achey breasts. The cramps lasted for a solid 3-4 days, whereas I am still experiencing spouts of nausea and achey breasts. I have another week until my period so I can not take a pregnancy test yet, but to be honest I would be amazed if we conceived this quickly....

Has anyone else experienced these syptoms their first month off birth control? Is this just my body re-adjusting itself?

Your body could be readjusting. If you're really just asking if you're pregnant, just take a test. Nothing is a pregnancy symptom until you turn a test.

  • As I said, it I have another week until I can take a test. But again I doubt I am. I was just curious how everyone else felt after stoping birth control and if this was normal. Thanks.
  • Lots of people have side effects coming off hormonal birth control. It could be pregnancy or PMS, only a positive test will tell you the difference. If you're pregnant enough for symptoms, you're pregnant enough to test positive.

I don't know why it would be shocking for you to get pregnant quickly. With my daughter, I finished my birth control pack & was pregnant before my next period started. It's very possible -- but no one here can tell you what's going on with your body.

  • This is my second cycle off BC and I've had a few weird symptoms.  Yesterday my boobs were really sore, which is strange since it was CD8 and I haven't even ovulated yet.  Last month around mid-cycle I got a lot of chin acne, which was new since I generally have good skin.  I've had a lot of cramping off and on, and as far as I can tell it doesn't line up with ovulating or anything in particular.  Just random.  My first off-bcp period was actually fairly light and with minor cramping, which wasn't what I expected.  Basically my body has been weird, but since I've been temping and learning a lot from this board, I know not to take any of the symptoms too seriously.  If you're not already, I'd start temping so that you actually know more where you are in your cycle!  It has really helped me and my peace of mind. :-)

  • You have no clue when you ovulated, or if you even did yet, unless you're temping. So this is all speculation with you probably assuming you're a textbook 28 day cycle. Please read the newbie blog, the information there is a plenty.
  • The reason the I said that I would be surprise if I were pregnant are because: 1.) My Doctor said that for most woman it takes a few months for your body to re-regulate itself after you discontinue use of birth control and that during this time I would be less likely to conceive. 2.) Because I was aware that implantation typically occur 7-10 days past ovulation therefore I could not atribute my [for lack of better terms] symptoms that I have been experiencing to being that of implantation.

And yes, your are right I do not know exactly when I ovulate. I ordered a thermometer so that I could began tracking my temps, but until I receive it I have been going off the assumption that my cycle is 28-days.

I was just curious to see if anyone else had weird symptoms their first month off birth control, thats all : )

You know, a quick google search turns up hundreds of sites that confirm that you can indeed have wacky hormones and symptoms following stopping birth control, why would you need to ask others to confirm what you've already obviously heard from your doctor or read?  To answer your question though, I thought for sure I was pregnant for several months after coming off of my pills, so many hormones my body hadn't experienced for years while on BCP caused all of that though, I wasn't pregnant.  Know how I knew?  I took a test.  If what you're feeling is truly due to pregnancy, you would turn a test positive, so test already.  You can't know when or even if you ovulated anyways, so you honestly can't know if your period is still a week away, so test already.  If negative, then gee, I don't know, your body is trying to figure itself out after hormonal birth control.  Not rocket science here.

Lastly, you would do yourself a huge favour by checking out the free tutorials on Fertility Friend, you clearly could use some instruction on how a woman's body and cycles actually work.  Thinking you could possibly be experiencing such severe pregnancy symptoms a week before your period is 'due' but thinking you can't test yet means you have lots to learn.

  • I had a few months of nausea during the 2WW when I stopped taking the pill.  It sucked.  BUT it eventually went away.  Others are right - your cycle may be a little "off" for the next month or two (or three).  Mine regulated after I had my first period - but that first period off birth control took 42 days.  I think my next cycle was 28 days then after that they were all between 30 and 32 days.

And, yes, I recommend trying fertility friend to help you track symptoms, cervical mucus, and your temp.   All of those can be helpful to you in getting your "sexy time" at the right time.

    Good luck to you!!
  • Yes, I had sore boobs and some changes in libido the first few weeks off of BC.
