...weed whacker. Ah, romance! haha I got him a fire pit which could either be romantic (nice quiet evening together by the fire) or cause bodily harm (I am a klutz).
My DH is really good at gift giving. He always gets jewelry bc he considers it an investment. always a catch 22. Lol. BUT one year I got an engagement ring that looked exactly like the rings from party city I used when I threw my cousin a bridal shower. I had an extra and wore it around the house for fun and he found it in my bathroom and thought it would be funny to give it to me in front of my parents. We were like 20. Luckily I'm very observant and noticed two things. 1. It was gone from the bathroom and 2. I saw that the medal was turning colors. Good thing we both have a huge sense of humor. He forgot our anniversary that year so I think I just got Cheesecake Factory and a good laugh. Good enough for me.
EDIT: Sorry ladies a bit too early for me. I am on my iPad and just realized I was on the wrong board. I thought I was on 3TC. My apologies.

This isn't exactly what you are asking but it is a funny story. My H is a bit of a wine snob so our first Christmas together well before the holidays I was shopping with my sister and saw a wine chiller. I told her it was neat while making a mental note that it may be a good thing to get him for Christmas. So he isn't a very good gift giver so he asked my sister for ideas and she told him that I had made a comment about the wine chiller so he got it for me. Of course now we live together so we both use it anyway.

My husband gets the prize for this one. For my 30th birthday he got me a stove. All my friends husbands were throwing them these nice parties and giving them meaningful gifts and I get a receipt for a stove. He totally ruined that birthday for me. Yes we could have used a new stove, but money was not tight at the time so it wasn't like we couldn't afford it. We could have just gone out and bought a stove. There were a few years that money was tight and we would agree to not exchange gifts in order to afford what ever home improvements we needed to do, and I am fine with that. But this was not one of those years.
I had seen the receipt on the table one day and thought , huh that's weird! But then I started putting the pieces together and realized he was giving it to me as a gift. We went to his mothers for dinner that night and I told him I didn't want to open my card there because I knew I wasn't going to be able to hide my disappointment. Well he made me open it and my reaction was not what he expected and his mother said " see I told you she wouldn't be happy". His mothers has always told her boys never give a woman a gift that has to be plugged in unless they ask for it. Why couldn't he listen to her!!!!!
That was the last time he got me a major appliance for a major life event. Now I get diamonds.
I got a clothes steamer once but I actually needed one so what could I say??

People actually made fun of us b/c we registered for a lot of very practical, super unfrilly gifts for our wedding like vice grips. We were actually bummed that no one bought us the garbage disposal we picked out. I guess it doesn't scream eternal love and romance.

Mine is kind of a funny story. Dh, bf at the time, was sent to work in Colombia. He was there a few weeks and upon his return he gave me a cool little ceramic mask, which I liked but it was followed with the question "you don't like emeralds, do you?" I just looked at him and said he should know there are really no gemstones I have an aversion to. We were a short time following at a jewelry store and he saw the price was significantly higher here. He just stated that he probably missed an opportunity there.
@hooligans4 - I don't know. I might be able to top that. My husband forgot my 30th birthday altogether. The only thing that saved him was there were mitigating circumstances - we were getting married 3 days later. Still, a happy birthday would have been nice.
When we first started dating, I got my wisdom teeth out. I flew back to Illinois from DC for the procedure. To show his sympathies, he ordered a bonsai from a floral company and had it sent to me. It was nice, but I would have much preferred get well flowers. He is very pragmatic, so I'm sure that he wanted to buy something that would live a long time.

OK, @Hooligans4, and@CaraH, I'll see your stove and your forgotten birthday, and I'll raise you....this.
College boyfriend once gave me a twenty to get myself some flowers and a gift for Valentines Day. Do I need to mention that this was near the end of our relationship?
To be fair, the last time he had gotten me something really nice (a ring), I pawned it during one of our many breakups. Sooooo...
We're both in much happier relationships now.

I might be able to beat you ladies. My DH, bf at the time, was coming to my family Christmas celebration. He had been eluding to an engagement ring as my gift. I was so excited! When I opened the box, which was a big, i figured he was playing a trick on me with the big box. Not so much. It was windsheild wipers for my car. Needless to say, I was super disappointed and in tears and he felt terrible. He thought he was being funny.
Needless to say, 3 months later, we were engaged. So alls well that ends well.

Nah, he's getting married (to his girlfriend of about a million years) soon. He's actually not a bad person; the V-Day "gift" just happened toward the end of a long relationship that had definitely run its course.

My DH is actually good at gift giving. I just wanted to share this with you all. My grandfather once got my grandma a brand new MOP BUCKET for her birthday, which incidentally is ALSO Valentines day. Needless to say she was not happy. My grandfather has been gone 17 years and my grandma STILL complains about the time he bought her a mop bucket.
