Another name question

So, I totally have a name picked out for this baby boy. However, DH is arguing it. I can't decide if he's doing it just to not give in so easily (I didn't give in easily to DS1's name and ended up changing the spelling from Ronin to Ronan) or if he really doesn't like it. The names he's throwing out are seriously ridiculous. I named DD and he named DS1 so isn't it my turn to name again?? ;) Anyway, I'm interested in what you all think of my name and I'm thrilled to hear other suggestions! I'm trying very hard to make a short list so at least there could be a few others he might like better to choose from. However, I looked through tons of names the other day and couldn't find ANYTHING AT ALL that stuck out! The name in my mind is so engraved already, I guess.

The name I love is

Rhys Ryan

(Ryan is DH's first name)

Do you know how to pronounce Rhys or did it throw you completely off? It's the traditional (Welsh) spelling for Reece or Reese.

I also think the name flows well with the sib set. What do you think? Kaya, Ronan and Rhys.

Re: Another name question

  • I dont have a clue how to pronounce it. Like "rice"? If so, then I don't like it.

  • Said like Reese, correct? I like the name!

  • I've seen it before and knew how to pronounce it. But if you said it out loud I wouldn't have spelled it right.

I don't hate it but if DH really does I'd go back to the drawing board. I know someone often has to compromise but I don't think it should be to a name you really don't like.

Clearly I didn't read your entire post. I like Reese. I have a cousin named Reese. But I dont like the Rhys spelling because it will be queationed all his life and just a pain.

  • I just asked DH last night what he thought of the name Rhys!  I love it.  DH thinks immediately of the spelling Reese when I said the name, and he thinks it's girly, like Reese Witherspoon.

I know how to pronounce it, and I think that since that actor Jonathan Rhys Myers has become more famous, the name is gaining popularity and the spelling/pronunciation concern won't be an issue forever.

  • Yeah, the spelling is the only thing I worry about.  I just like how it looks so much!  And I feel like it's much more masculine than Reese (probably because of Reese Witherspoon).  Y'all are right, he probably would be correcting people his whole life :/.  Any other suggestions similar out there??

  • I like it.  I'd considered it if dd2 had been a boy.

  • Reed/Reid had a similar sound and is easier on the spelling- and I feel it's less ambiguous. Is this an option?

For the record, I have been saying Rhys as Riss for forever. I had no idea I was saying it wrong.
  • Yeah. I got it. Cute name.

We were going to name our baby Graeme if she was a boy. (Graham) European spellings are fine. If people don't get it...just explain it.

  • I like the spelling, but did pronounce it as "Riss." I agree with other PP, if you liked Reese I would probably spell it "Reese."
  • I've seen the name before thanks to Jonathan Rhys Myers, however all this time I was pronouncing it "rice"! Whoops.
  • I like the name, I just had no idea how to say it until you mentioned it.  I was saying "rice" or "riss" in my head.

I like it but as PPs have said I'd be worried about pronunciation and spelling. I actually read it like "rise". I don't think it sounds/looks feminine if you spell it Reese, it reminds me of Kyle Reese from Termination.

  • It's a cute name but when I first read it, I pronounced it rice in my head.

  • Personally, I don't like how many 'r's there are but to each his own. Nothing wrong with the name overall. I knew how to pronounce it (my brother had a friend with that name and spelling) Its not common but it isn't unheard of either. If you really like it and DH agrees, go for it.

BTW, glad you changed the spelling for Ronan, the other way looks strange. I really like that name.

Thank you for the pic MRSclarke08.  He IS so delicious!  And I had the name Reece on my list for DS1 but I think it's when I started seeing his name around that I really became fond of this particular spelling.  Mmmmmm, he is so hot!

I know how to pronounce it because of Jonathan Rhys Meyers.  I like it.  And just because, here's delicious proof I know who Jonathan Rhys Meyers is ...image

  • I know the name. I really like the traditional spelling, but you know people will always be saying it wrong. If it were me I'd consider spelling it Reece/Reese to avoid this. My own name is constantly and always mispronounced (even by my inlaws to this day lol), and it is tiresome to correct.

  • I really like Rhys. But I'm not a big fan of it with Ryan. Do you (or DH) have any other middle name ideas? Maybe DH's middle name or a grandparent name, or another name you love?

  • I like Rhys because I know a few sweet kids with that name. That said, prior to knowing these kiddos, I thought the name was "Riss." No big deal. You'll just have to deal with people pronouncing it wrong, which wouldn't totally dissuade me, personally, if I LOVED the name and was set on it.

I do not like MN Ryan with Rhys. I get tongue-tied even thinking about it.
