1st Trimester

A few questions

We had our first OBGYN appointment yesterday and they offer you to take an HIV test I of course consented did you do this as well? Also I'm considered AMA I'm 34 and will be 35 at the end of the month I am 9 weeks along and I got a little freaked out when my midwife started talking about genetic testing, Down syndrome, and spina bifida, should I get this testing done? It will not change anything with the pregnancy but should we find out? Please let me know what you think.

I didn't get asked about any testing for STDs, but that doesn't mean they didn't do it... I had a full panel of blood work done in the first tri for all sorts of things. I wouldn't be surprised if that was included.

As for genetic testing, I think that's a personal choice. Have you looked into what your insurance covers? We did a basic NT Scan which looks for markers for Downs Syndrome and a couple other things as well as developmental issues. Our insurance plan covered it, so it was a no-brainer for us. But not everyone goes that route, and there are plenty of options available. In the off chance there is an issue with your baby, having that information early gives you plenty of time to think about your options and plan for the future.

STD and HIV testing was part of the standard blood work at my first prenatal visit.
  • STD testing is standard practice at my OB office.

As far as the NT scan, that's up to you. I didn't have it with DS because I didn't really know what it was and was in the middle of switching OB offices. But I did with this pregnancy because if there was anything wrong, I would want to be able to prepare.

  • Std is a standard test here in Canada as well... The genetic testing is optional, I've never done it though... It wouldn't change anything but. If you do get the genetic testing them they give you a number like "oh maybe the baby will have a 1-10% chance of having something" and then it leaves you totally freaked out for the rest of your pregnancy when really everything could be fine! But that's just my opinion. :)
  • Yes HIV and std testing was just thrown in to the blood test. Didn't mention it but let me know with the results I was all good.lol..
As far as the other testing. They can do this through 2 blood tests. I do recommended you do it. If there is something showing to so more testing. Then worry about it then. Even then the tests aren't that bad. Its better to know to help your baby and prepare yourself.

STD testing is normal at my OB, genetic testing is optional

ETA: we can't tell you whether or not to get the testing, only you can decide that.  I got the testing last time, and I wasn't close to 35 or considered high risk.  I got it because I wanted to be as prepared as I could in case something was wrong. I wanted time to prepare and do research on how to have a baby with certain issues.

Every person is different, which is why they are optional.
