first time flutters???

WARNING FTM here.

Okay - so I've been feeling something a little strange in my tummy today - kind of butterfly/worm feeling ...

HOWEVER. It's like, in the middle of my stomach, around my belly button. Isn't that too high for it to be baby? I am expecting when I feel baby it will be down lower, toward my pelvis. Maybe not??

Re: first time flutters???

  • I think at 17 weeks your uterus is just a little below your belly button - maybe an inch or so? So I think it could be the baby!

  • My OB told me the top of the uterus reaches the belly button at 20 weeks, but that at 16 weeks it's about 3 fingers below, so because you're at 17 now, it might be a little early to feel something in that area. She also said to expect to feel movement for a FTM between 20 and 24 weeks. But hey, you never know. Everyone is different.

At my last appointment, they asked me if I was feeling anything, so I think it's possible.  Also, when the OB felt around, she showed me where my uterus was and it was getting up nearer my belly button.

With that said, any flutters I've felt have been lower down still.  But, I might just be feeling gas, too.
  • crystaldh thanks that's good to know.  The last time I was at the OB was a month ago and they never told me anything.  I've since changed and I go next week to meet my new one.  I was wondering when the uterus started moving further up.  I'm patiently waiting to feel little munchkin.

  • At my 16w 6d appt my OB said my uterus was nearly to my belly button. I haven't felt anything yet, but she said I definitely should by my next appt (at 20 weeks) so hopefully!

I'm not sure if what you felt was the baby or just things shifting.  Can you feel the top of your uterus yourself?  Mine seems to be pretty much at my belly button (I was concerned at first as I am a couple of weeks shy of 20 weeks but the A/S looked fine in terms of size and amniotic fluid).  If you can, was the fluttering in that area?

I haven't felt any flutters yet, but over the last couple of days I've felt strange new sensations that sort of feel like maybe the baby is stretching and pulling my uterus in two different directions in there?  It's probably just the ligaments stretching, but one can hope :)

  • It may be early to feel it by your belly button like PP said. I am feeling a lot of movment and it is all lower. I can feel the top of my uterus and it is a few fingers below my navel.

    Name my baby!
  • I can't really feel my uterus I don't think. I already had a little tummy before getting pregnant and I'm afraid of pressing too hard lol

  • Nothing wrong with pressing!  Baby is super well protected :)  I poke around all the time.  I too had a little tummy before getting pregnant, so I can't really tell what I'm feeling haha.
  • I have a weird uterus that is always very excited about being pregnant.  (it is above my belly button at only 15.5 weeks....)   But...  the flutters I am feeling are a few inches below my belly button off to the right side.

Anyway... it's hard to say.  Everyone is different.  You might have a baby pushing the limits of your northern border.  ??

Even if this isn't the real thing yet... it will be soon!

  • so how hard are you pressing?

I had a belly pre pregnsncy too but I think I can feel my uterus. Someone posted in another thread to walk your fingers down your belly and once you hit something more firm that's your uterus. That's what I've been doing! Mine is an inch or so below my belly button still.

I start a bit above my belly button and slowly walk my way down and try to feel for a firm ridge.  You may not feel it or may not feel it all the time depending on how all the contents are positioned and how you are positioned.  If you can't feel it, no worries :)  DH always laughs at me when he catches me doing this. I'm just so excited to have popped, I can't help myself.  If you really want to feel it, at your next visit you can ask or if you don't want to ask, just pay attention to where your OB/MW feels it and try it again at home for yourself.

I've been feeling kicks in my ribs and I swear it's way to damn early for that.

I have been feeling that too and was so confused as to how it could be the baby. I never get that feeling unless I'm pregnant.

Haha I think your first word there is what your feeling. I have had serious shit pains in my side today.Lol sucks.

I have pushed down on my lower abdomen to see if I feel anything. last night once I felt the tiniest bump against my hand. verytiny but felt it. I am about 18w tomorrow. So if I want pushing or trying I would not have noticed it.
  • I haven't even begun to think I am feeling baby yet.     No question here,  I have felt nothing.

  • I am about 17 weeks and my movement is about 2 inches below my belly button. It sounds a little high for it to be the baby but I'm sure in a few weeks you will know for sure what it was once the movement gets stronger and more consistent. Sometimes it's more of a hindsight thing to know for sure what it was.
  • The best way to find your uterus is to have an orgasm and immediately feel for it. Your ute gets hard as a rock then.

I HAD NO IDEA about this, after sex last night I was super firm around there and actually got concerned. Hahaha

It freaked me out the first time I felt it, too.  I thought I had damaged something!
