Restless sleep?

My LO is 13 months and has never been a good sleeper. He doesn't STTN and  wakes up to nurse a couple times a night  but  lately he's been extremely restless at night.  I'm wondering if it's more than just being a crappy sleeper.  I know kids move around a lot in there sleep but he's all over place. He flops from side to side, rolls all over our bed/crib, kicks and sometimes bangs his head on the headboard or crib multiple times. If he's in bed with us, we have to hold him down otherwise he will fling himself out of our bed.  At first I thought he was dreaming but he's awake during it. He's very upset and can't seem to settle himself back to sleep. When he's not being like that, I can always get him back to sleep by nursing but nursing doesn't even settle him.  Both my husband and I have tried everything to get him back to sleep but nothing seems to work. We pretty much let him toss and turn until he finally wears himself out. Unfortunately that can take hours. This happens whether he's in his crib or in our bed.

Do you think it's normal to be that restless or is something bothering him? He does get ear infections frequently. I have noticed that he's a little sensitive about his ears, especially his left one. He gets very upset when I clean them or when I take his temperature.  We have an appointment with his doctor but I was curious if anyone else has a restless sleeper like this.

Re: Restless sleep?

  • He is much more tired after sleeping because he's not getting any sleep. He starts off in his crib but I bring him into bed because at least I can lay in bed with him while he's crying and all over the place.  Staying in his crib doesn't help him settle him at all. I thought it was a phase but it's happening almost every night now for the last month.

I haven't noticed more gas than usual but I will pay attention more the next few days.
  • L is pretty restless, and she does wake up crying whimpering several times per night. It has increased over the last month or so. Nine times out ten she falls right back asleep as soon as she grabs her lovey. She wakes me up over the monitor, although I don't usually have to go to her room.

I think it's pretty normal right now. They are teething, and growing. It's hard to be a baby.
