Pregnant x4

edited June 2014 in Multiples
Don't really know where to post on these boards. I had introduced myself on Success after IF and then saw this board- so here goes.
Hey all! I am newly pregnant after quite the battle with infertility. I've been in recovery from an eating disorder for several years and still believe that might have had something to do with it. I had an iUi with follistim on May 7&8. I quickly developed OHSS, which became exacerbated as my HCG rose. I gained about 13 pounds in fluid and ended up in the ER the night of my confirmed pregnancy bc I couldn't breathe. When I followed up with my RE, he hinted that I might have multiples.
Monday, he confirmed- I am currently expecting quads. They are measuring .72cm, .66cm, .57cm, & .39cm. The RE said the small one had about a 50% chance of survival but that it's still too early to tell. At first. I was in shock. But with each passing day, the thought is growing on me and I want all my babies to make it...
I'm just looking for any feedback and support. I have an appointment with a high risk specialist on July 9 but think I want to meet with him sooner. I follow up with my doctor next week to see how they are growing.... I'm nervous and excited and completely in love with my little beans

  • Congrats to you! July 9 does seem a long time away- I would call back and see if you could be seen earlier or just watched closely by your RE. I'm only having twins and we still had once or twice a week ultrasounds with the RE until 10 weeks. Best of luck to you!

  • Welcome! My local multiples group has one set of quads.
  • ManadaManada member
    Oh congrats!
Someone from my home town had quads a couple of years ago (they are all doing well now), I think she got a ton of support from other quad parents via blogs as well as multiples boards and groups.

Good luck with your specialist. I found it really helpful to find out everything I could about our Dr, and the hospital's high-risk obstetrics team before I met with them, as well as any resources for high-risk pregnancies and future NICU care; it helped me find my way through while we got to know all the people there.

  • Thanks all. To answer a few of your questions:

The RE didn't say how far along I actually was. My count is messed up because I didn't start injections until 12 days after my period (had a cyst that needed to reduce) and wasn't inseminated until about 23 days after my period. I'm guess I'm about 7 weeks.  I know that this is the dangerous area and that anything can happen...I'm praying that each baby will be fine. One RE specialist told me he expected once I got pregnant, I would be ok- it was just a matter of getting me to ovulate.

I haven't told my parents yet. I haven't even told them we were going through infertility treatments. I didn't want to worry them. I know it's early, but I feel the need to tell them this weekend so I can have extra emotional support. My husband has been wonderful & I have a few friends that know. Besides, I already have pooch that makes me look about 12 or 14 weeks (guessing the OHSS), so I might as well let them know.

Question for all of you- how do you get past the fears? With early slight cramp or twinge, I get so worried.  Currently, I am having quite the pain on my side that runs almost to my groin. The doctor said it's probably my body stretching.  I just hope everything is growing like it should.

And any other tips- websites, groups to join, anything.  The RE is expecting me to have at least triplets, we are just waiting to see about Baby D.

Side note- I"m a counselor for substance use & mental health & people at work, including my clients, are already asking if I'm pregnant. How do I answer that?

Thank you all for the feedback!

  • Wow!! Congrats!!!

  • Congratulations! I had the pains earlier on. My OB called it "growing pains" as everything is being stretched out in new and strange ways. (And I'm just having 2). It was a little worrisome but went away around probably around 10 weeks for me. The ladies here are super friendly and helpful, so whenever you have questions, ask away!
  • Congratulations! What wonderful news! Best wishes for you and your babies!
  • Congrats x 4!!! Listen to the ladies here they know their stuff! Wishing a healthy and happy pregnancy!!

  • wow, congrats. The pain down your side definitely sounds like normal ligament pain to me but I remember how scary every little twinge was and I was only worrying for two not four. luckily you'll be highly monitored so when something is scaring you you won't have to wait long for reassurance. any way, I hope you have a happy healthy pregnancy.

  • Thanks for the reassurance on the pains. It took so long to get here that I want things to go smoothly as they can.

I agree in wanting to wait as long as possible before letting people know. I've been just saying no if people ask when I'm pregnant. My clients pick up on everything! I did let me director know to begin preparing in case I end up needing to leave early some days. And also bc I'm assuming I might be on bedrest- something we never considered when I was hoping for pregnancy! He's super supportive. I also have one friend at work who also went through infertility treatment and is due with a singleton in early October.

I tend to be a high anxiety person so I'm trying to stay as calm as possible. It's definitely strengthening my prayer life! I live for ultrasound days!
  • Congrats x4! Best wishes for a healthy and long pregnancy for you and your babies!
I'm anxious too and staying busy, doing a lot of research has helped.

Like pp said, you will be highly monitored and have lots of ultrasounds and appointments! Make sure you find an OB and MFM you feel comfortable with. I also joined a local mothers of multiples group that helps me connect with local moms in the area.

As for telling people, that depends on your comfort level. Wearing looser tops might help ;) Early in my pregnancy I didn't tell everyone that I was expecting twins-especially with people I wasn't close with.

  • thank you all for the well wishes. Ultrasound this morning showed all are continuing to grow. 3 are looking great with wonderful sacs. The tiny one is still growing, but has a much smaller sac and the doctor isn't sure if he's going to make it.  All I can think is, him being our child, he will be a fighter!

I am supposed to be having an appointment with a High Risk Specialist because I have to make the decision if we will want to selectively reduce. This is a very hard decision for me and is causing me much angst. Any feedback on what to ask the specialist, blogs/accounts to read, suggestions, helpful advice?

    Thank you all so much!
