Success after IF

multiples feedback

Hey all-

I am currently around 6-7 weeks pregnant after IF. Our second IUI was successful----x4.  Our ultrasound this week showed 4 babies (.72cm, .66cm, .57cm, & .39cm). The RE is concerned about the smallest and said there is about a 50% chance it will stay.  I go back next week for a followup to see how things are progressing and overall, physically, I'm doing ok.  I did have OHSS so I'm still very swollen & already look about 12 weeks pregnant.

Emotionally, I'm completely overwhelmed, as I KNEW this could happen, however never imagined myself having anything over twins.  Any feedback from anyone with multiples and how to make it through this 1st trimester without going completely crazy would be helpful!!

Re: multiples feedback

  • I unfortunately can't lend any advice regarding multiples, but oh my goodness! Congratulations xs 4! I can imagine that must be completely overwhelming...I hope some of these sweet, supportive ladies here can share some good tips!

  • I cannot imagine the mix of emotions you must be feeling right now! Congratulations on your BFP! A quad pregnancy is risky for sure. I would intro over on the multiples board. I haven't been over there in a while but there used to be a few MoMs of trips and quads there. They will be able to point you in the right direction to start. It is still so early so I'd say to give yourself some time to digest everything. I would recommend reading Dr. Luke's book "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or More." I definitely did not follow her program word for word, but she has some good general guidelines. I believe her book helped me carry K&A to term. Just take it with a grain of salt and don't let her scare you. As for the OHSS, load up on the Gatorade. I had it with my first IVF cycle and drinking a ton (I'm talking 96oz a day) of Gatorade helped keep me out of the hospital according to my RE. Wishing you and your LOs all the best!

Wow! Congrats...I can't imagine.. I second reading Dr Luke's book. I have twins and read and followed some portions of the book... While I did not carry to term, I believe following parts of book was why we had a good outcome even though the twins were born early.

I bet you are in shock! Right now I would just really take care of yourself because that's the best thing you can do for your babies. And congrats x4!

  • Thanks all. I will buy that book. I am terribly nervous and  extremely excited. I hope to find more answers and did introduce myself on the multiples board as well.  This is quite the adventure, but everyone who knows keeps saying if anyone can do it- I can.

I am so excited and hopeful at being a Momma!

  • I also recommend Dr. Luke's book. I carried my twins until I was induced at 37 weeks and I believe following some of the guidelines there helped me to do that. I think some of the best advice to follow during any pregnancy, but particularly a multiples pregnancy is to STAY HYDRATED. I wish you and your LOs the best of luck.

  • Yup, definitely get that book. Like others, I didn't follow it all the way, but I did use it a a good guideline, and I carried to 35w6d. My babies were 5 lbs and 5.2, and they came home with me at two days old. Take care of yourself!

  • You ladies that carried so far are inspiring! I will order that book tonight and overnight it if I have to! I'm majorly concerned about nutrition bc I tend to under-eat... And obviously concerned about exercise and work. For a couple days I wasn't able to walk from OHSS but can now usually walk about 2 or 3 miles... It's getting hot here so I better enjoy it while I can!

I did not have multiples, but there was a momma who did IVF the same time as me and she had triplets. (She isn't on the boards anymore, so i'll post what i remember) She was extremely diligent in getting prepared as early as possible. I *think* she had her nursery done by 18-20 weeks because she knew it was highly likely she would be on bedrest.

She was very strict about getting enough water, calories and rest. Since you said you under eat, I suggest getting to a dietician immediately so you can start eating enough healthy calories for your babies. As you probably know, you will need an MFM that you like and trust as you will be seeing a lot of them.

I'm not sure what you do for work, but getting off your feet and taking a nap is going to be essential pretty quickly. The momma I'm talking about was able to get a cot in her office for just this.

Just so you know, she carried her triplets to 36 (35w6d?) weeks and they were born very healthy with amazing birth weights.

I also suggest joining Car Seat for the Littles on FB. They can help configure your car set up and help you pick the right car seats for tiny babies. Sadly, there are many infant seats that will not fit tiny babies.

I wish the best of luck to you! Take good care of yourself!
