Cloth Diapering

New to CD - Intro

I have been lurking for a while but wanted to introduce myself before jumping in to discussions.

I am 22 weeks pregnant and due October 15. I am new to cloth diapering but have been doing lots of lurking here and also reading other resources. We are planning to cloth diaper from the beginning and have already started building our stash particularly of NB AIOs. I have 5 FB XS, two new style GroVia NB and a BG NB in the newborn stash so far. Thinking of also getting some prefolds and covers in addition to some more AIOs.

Anyone have a favorite NB AIO they would recommend?

The imagine AIOs have worked the best for us so far. I like the NB simplex too, but they are still a little big.
I've liked prefolds and fitteds with covers much more than I would have guessed.

  • Congrats on the pregnancy.  Welcome.  Prefolds and fitteds under covers is the most recommended set-up for NB stage around here.  That's what I use and love!  So no AIO recs here.  Maybe someone else can help you out?

Simplex last longer IMO. The BGs are trim, but only worked for a very short time for us. I prefer flats and fitteds to prefolds, but prefolds are very popular around here

  • Hi, I am due with #2 on Oct 18th!

I am not a huge fan of AIOs personally, especially when dealing with 10x a day nb poop, so I do encourage you to get those prefolds and covers, or fitteds like workhorses if you want easier changes.

I should probably know this but what do you mean by workhorses? Is that just a basic cover?

A workhorse is a basic fitted diaper sold by green mountain diapers. It is basically a prefold that has been shaped and has elastic around the legs. So works like a prefold but goes on easier, with no folding and has elastic at the legs to help keep poop in. Other brands make similar fitteds, but GMD workhorses are probably the most popular.

  • Workhorses are a fitted diaper.  Formally called: Cloth-eez Workhorse Fitted Diaper.  You can go to Green Mountain Diapers online and find them.  They are glorious for NB!  Also keep that store in mind b/c I am sure you will hear people referring to GMD a lot too.
  • Thank you for the information! I will for sure check out GMD!

  • I agree with PPs, workhorses are the way to go for nb. I bought 4 in the smallest size (and the next two sizes) and they are my favorite diapers. DH likes them too, he's not a good folder yet.
  • I had almost all aio's for the nb stage.  I loved the imagine bamboo aio's like the wise @tj1979 said.  I see no different whatsoever between an aio and prefold having poop on it 10+ times a day :-/  if there's poop on any of them, you throw them into the wet bag and then the wash.

There are quite a few differences.
    1. cost. The more diapers you go through a day, the bigger your stash needs to be, so having a cheaper diaper is a good thing.
    2. Easier to clean and dry faster. The more poop the more washing can be an issue, and drying time matters when you go through diapers so quickly
    3. We never had as much luck with pockets/AIOs containing poop as prefolds and covers. Some people don't like them because "it is like putting on two diapers", but in the case of frequent runny poop I see that as a good thing. Usually the poop was contained in the diaper, but the cover caught it if it wasn't.
    4. Can be easier to customize, both absorbency and fit. Both are important when NBs can grow so quickly/ have such skinny legs, etc.

Absolutely nothing wrong with preferring AIOs, but I do think there are more reasons to consider prefolds, flats, or simple fitteds during nb stage than during the other stages.

I meant... There is absolutely no difference between poop being on a prefold vs. on an aio

    I know...and I was disagreeing.
There is a difference because it can be harder to get off, etc...
