Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC post mirena with PCOS

Hey ladies,
It's been a while since I last posted on the Bump's message boards but DH and I have decided that it is time we start TTC again.  DD is now two and a half and has been requesting a baby "brudder" or "sissy" so we figured what better time?!  I was diagnosed with PCOS and hypothyroidism before conceiving DD...went a year actively TTC with no luck and basically gave up and BOOM pregnant naturally within a couple of months.  We are getting ready to go to the Dominican Republic for our five year wedding anniversary on the 21st of June and I am having my IUD removed the 16th of June (next Monday).  I have been reading all sorts of success and unfortunately just as many unsuccessful stories, however, haven't seen anyone post with PCOS.  I have also been taking Estradiol 2mg for about a month now due to having some brown spotting every other week with the Mirena.  I know some OB's say to wait a full cycle before TTC due to being too thinned out, but with me being on the Estradiol and "fluffing" up my uterine lining I am hoping this will help if you will.  I would love to hear of any success stories of anyone getting their BFP post Mirena removal who has PCOS.  Thanks!!

Re: TTC post mirena with PCOS

  • I am probably not the one to answer this in a way that will make you happy. I got my Mirena out and got pregnant RIGHT AWAY. YAY! And then I had a MC. If your doctor says to wait, WAIT.
Oh no :(  I am so sorry to hear this!!  I have seen a lot of MC posts too post Mirena.  I will definitely get the go ahead from my OB first and wait if necessary!  Thanks for the quick response!

No firsthand PCOS experience here but I've heard contrary advice, that the post-Mirena withdrawal bleed doesn't thin the lining any more than a real period. But if my doc had asked me to wait a cycle, I would have waited a cycle. My post-Mirena bleeding was pretty light but I'm having a real period now and it's not (but it's also my first real postpartum period after 2+ years of being pregnant and then not having periods on Mirena so my body has to figure out its hormonal situation). I'd recommend temping if you aren't already so you can confirm O and know if your periods are legitimately late while TTC. Good luck!

Same boat here. Had Mirena out 5/7/14 (5 weeks ago). I also have PCOS  with elevated testosterone and DHEA, no actual ovarian cysts. TTC our first, so no idea how it will go. Still waiting for my period to return after having it removed, all I had so far was a withdrawal bleed lasting 4 days after. For now, just temping.

  • Lurker here, but here's my experience. I had my Mirena removed 4/09, was told to wait 3 months (not cycles) and only ovulated a few times in the following year. 5/10 we joined a PCOS research study with a local RE, did a couple of Femara cycles got pregnant and m/c twice. We did RPL testing, added progesterone and extra Folic Acid (due to MTHFR diagnosis and low progesterone) and were told to try on our own for 6 months before starting treatment again since I had been working on losing weight and my hormone levels were much better. I got pregnant with DD in 4/11, right before we would've started treatment again.

  • Thanks ladies, I am not sure of my lab levels as far as my PCOS diagnosis.  I was diagnosed four years ago and didn't ask too many questions about it then...just dealt with it.  I have been on low level levothyroxine since then and and my TSH levels have been right on point every visit.  I do think when I had my transvaginal ultrasound it showed cystic ovaries, however, at my 6 week PP visit the ultrasound tech told me to get on BC immediately because my ovaries were full of eggs.  I also just recently had a transvaginal ultrasound due to sporadic breakthrough bleeding with Mirena and the ultrasound tech told me that she saw no issues with my uterus/ovaries and that they couldn't have looked more perfect??  I am almost considering getting a second opinion as far as my PCOS diagnosis.  GL to all of you!!

Why were the ultrasound techs giving you medical advice? The u/s techs at the practices I've seen make zero medical comments, it's the OB or MFM doc who have talked to us about scan results and given us medical advice. Maybe it's local laws or a malpractice thing but the u/s techs here aren't ALLOWED to give medical advice or any sort of diagnosis even if they wanted to. I'd be finding another practice for a real opinion from an actual doctor who knows their shit about PCOS and thyroid issues.  I trust my OB to check my TSH and prescribe my thyroid medication for now but if I had multiple issues that could be affecting fertility I'd want to see a specialist.
  • Oh it is definitely not within their scope of practice that is for sure!  I work at the same hospital that my OB/GYN is located in and I would be in deep shit for sure if I mentioned anything about results to my patients...but never-the-less, they indeed told me (it was the same tech both times as well).  It is also a PA that has been dealing with all of my Mirena/PCOS issues.  From what I understand she takes on all of the IUD cases/miscarriage cases in the office.  When I was first diagnosed about four years ago, I initially went in because I was having heavy bleeding for about two weeks and they were concerned it was a miscarriage (that's how I started seeing this PA).  I am seeing the same PA when I have my Mirena removed this coming Monday, June 16th.  I guess I am just not truely convinced that I really do in fact have PCOS.  Or maybe I'm just in denial who knows.
