Tips for gaining weight?

At my last OB appointment, they scared the living daylights out of me because I'm down over 5 lbs. I was instructed to aim to gain about 1 1/5lbs per week from here on out. Only problem is that every morning I get on the scale, it's going in the opposite direction. Any tips on how y'all were able to stomach enough food to gain steadily?

I am on mobile so I can't see how far along you are, but I am in weight-gain stress territory myself at 20 weeks. I was up 10lbs but lost 5 with a mouth infection over last week when I couldn't eat, so I am working hard to eat more consciously.

I am just focusing on adding healthier calories at any opportunity. I snack on cheese, peanut butter and crackers. I add butter to my muffins, and stir oil in where it makes sense. I bulk up my lunch salads with extra cheese and nuts, and if I haven't had too much sugar that day my partner also makes me a milkshake in the evenings sometimes :). And that's in addition to regular meals....

For me I am trying to balance needing more calories and fat with not wanting to indulge in too much sugar and simple carbs. I am also testing my blood glucose to try to keep an eye on that as well......

Ugh, I can't even imagine stuffing all of that in me. I'm eating quite a bit more than I used to, include 1-2 Ensures a day, and at 15 weeks I've only just regained what I lost in the first tri.

  • I hadn't thought of adding Boost or Ensure. That's an easy addition of nutrients. Thanks! I've been nervous to add too many carbs/sugary foods and nervous that I'm not getting enough of the healthy foods. Maybe adding in some trail mix and Ensure will help.

  • I know there's a lot of importance placed on gaining weight during a twin pregnancy, but you are only 10 weeks along. Give yourself some time. I know a lot of twin moms didn't gain (or lost) weight in the first tri due to MS.

Deep breaths. Relax. You have time.

  • Full fat dairy - greek yogurt especially is full of fat and protein.

Avocado, nuts and but butters. Dried fruit is also very high is calories. Eggs are nutritious and high in calories. Granola is another one. Add coconut oil to smoothies.

There are tons of ways to eat calorie dense food without sitting down to an entire cake or tub of ice cream.

  • I didn't start gaining weight back until I was 25w in because of HEG, but Boost/ Ensure are really good ways, like PP said to add healthy calories and nutrients.

  • I should add that I had a dietitian friend of mine help me meal plan and I just doubles the portions but I was growing 3 babies. Add peanut butter to your smoothies, as a sauce for rice was always nice. I did a lot of hard boiled eggs too.
  • I think I had the opposite problem as you (I gained 65 lbs).  But I would drink the protein shakes and the protein bars.  I would usually have 4 or 5 meals a day.  A lot of high protein foods such as greek yogurt, peanut butter, chicken and beef.

  • I didn't watch what I ate at all. If I had a burger I had the bun. I always made sure I had veggies and fruit though. My third tri is when I finally gained weight. I think I just ate at night when I woke up and snacked between meals all day (I was always hungry).

  • I've been drinking ensures everyday since very early on and have pushed a lot of proteins into my diet.  If I'm craving something I eat it, I went through a lot of chick-fil-a early on.  I gained slowly at first even with as much as I was eating.  Most of my weight gain kicked in late 2nd tri and 3rd tri.

  • I didn't really gain until 12w when the nausea eased up. I read Dr. Luke's book and roughly followed her guidelines (I ate about 2/3 the recommended amount in each category, which was plenty for me). I gained at a steady rate from 12w on.

  • Ive been worried about my weight gain. Im only 16 weeks and have gained maybe 6 or 7 pounds total. I have my next check up Wednesday and I plan to talk to my Dr about it. I haven't had any morning sickness at all and I eat plenty. I try to snack healthy so I don't have to worry about my meals as much but I think I might try to start drinking the ensures. At the ultrasounds everything looks good and my boys are growing like they should so possibly I'm freaking out for nothing :)
