STM and white noise

I use white noise with DS for night only but I'm trying to see if using it in the day will help him nap easier.

I have no problem using it. But I'm curious to hear how it goes with children at night after they don't nap during the day. So I'm talking like 3,4 year olds. I plan on continuing using it during the day for naps until he drops them.

Is it a weaning process or are kids pretty much okay with out it. I know they say kids can't get addicted to it but I'm curious

Thanks :)

DD is only 2.5 but we've pretty much used a noise machine from day one. She still takes one nap and uses it for nap and bedtime still. I always meant to wean her from it but I love that it drowns out noise, which is especially helpful with a new baby. She sleeps like a champ though and really always has and I don't want to mess with that.

DS1 is 2 and we have used white noise from day 1 with him. It has really helped him to sleep better, especially at night while we are still up and making noise. I honestly don't have any plans to stop using it until he is in a different bedroom, which may be years. The way our house is set up the kid's bedroom is right by all the living areas. Without something to help damp the noise I don't think he would sleep as well. I'm not too worried about him becoming dependent on it either, and once the LO is sleeping in the same room I think it will be a lifesaver.

  • DD1 is 2.5 and still uses her sleep sheep for naps and bedtime. It shuts off after 45 minutes (she knows how to turn it back on if necessary). I don't see getting rid of it anytime soon. I sleep better with some white noise too.

  • My point is, I don't see the big deal in continuing to use it. She sleeps without it at daycare but I really don't care if she needs it at home.

  • DS is 2.5 and we've always used white noise for his naps and nighttime sleep. He can't sleep without it. Then again, I can't sleep well without white noise either, so I have no problem continuing to cater to his preference. We've never been in a situation where we couldn't come up with some kind of background noise for sleep, be it a phone app, a noise machine, or a fan.

  • I used to be a fan user but it drove dh crazy so I got rid of it when we moved since it was new noise to get used to anyway.

But is ds will sleep like a champ with white noise then I will totally keep it. Hopefully one day we will naturally wean from it maybe when we all go to bed around the same hour.

I mean babies spend 9 months listening to white noise. So to sleep in perfect quiet seems hard.

I was just curious. Thanks ladies :)

We use white noise with DS1 at home and have since the beginning.  He likes it at home because it is part of the "routine" but doesn't need it at daycare or when we're at someone else's house.

  • I did it with my tots that I worked with and they all slept like champs for 2 hours despite the noise of us adults moving around. So it's definitely worth it for that sleep time!
  • We use it still with DS1 and he is 3. He has a sleep sheep and we do the 45 minute option. He uses it for naps and night time, it just helps him fall asleep but he stays asleep fine once it shuts off. We are using a white noise machine that runs all night in our room (and where DS2 is sleeping) b/c he makes so much noise when he sleeps we have to have something else going.
