Movement consistency--24 weeks??

As many of us approach or just approached the third trimester on this month board, I hope this post is helpful for more people than just me!

I am going nuts with inconsistent movement.  I am 24 weeks tomorrow.  Today is the perfect example.  I woke up to him swimming along in there, kicking and pumping like mad.  Now as the day goes on, nothing.  Now, now, I know he's sleeping some.  But I've also heard at some point soon I should expect a certain number of movements per hour.  He just seems to have very active days and/or times followed by very silent days/times.

Anyone else going through this?  If you are over the hump and do have consistent movements, when did that really start to happen permanently?

Re: Movement consistency--24 weeks??

  • I definitely noticed less movement for most of week 23, but it seems like as soon as I said something, LO started up again - kicking at my seat belt in the car and stretching in weird directions when I'm  trying to get to sleep.

  • I've read conflicting information on this topic. I've heard you should feel so many movements an hour, but also that they have rest and awake periods. I know for me (28 weeks), I feel my baby moving quite often several times throughout the day so I don't really worry about it. There are definitely calm periods where I feel nothing though.

  • My doctor told me I'll feel consistent movements at about 28 weeks. Until then some days could be quieter than others, especially for me since I have an anterior placenta.

You may just have been too busy to feel them at times too!

  • I think they usually say that the baby doesnt have consistent movement and pattern a whole lot till around 28 weeks.  My dr told me not to even worry about kick count till at least then, as long as I feel him move a few times a day it should be ok, as they are still on the small side now (my baby is about 1lb 3 oz) and sometimes it wont be un heard of for him to be moving a bit and me not feel it at all.

He's starting to get in a bit of a rhythm  some days (im almost 25 weeks).  He usually is not very active only moving here and there till around lunchtime and then I have probably on average 4 movements per hour till about 3 pm when hes quiet for the most part again till around 7 or 8 pm.

This. Also, I have a hard time feeling her in the car and when I'm standing....I wouldn't worry until your doc mentions kick counts at 28 weeks

  • I am 26 weeks and only feel my baby kick when I am l laying down. I never just feel movement from the inside either. I have to place my hand on my stomach and physically feel her from the outside. I am constantly worried about it, but my doctor doesn't seem concerned.
  • The past couple of weeks have been the first consistent movements I can almost clock to the minute.

Before that he would have crazy days where he would kick and roll ALL DAY. And then the next two days - nothing. Only now is he getting to where it's obvious where his kicking practice times are, his somersault times are and his nap times are.

  • We just took a childbirth class and the nurse that taught it said that babies sleep just as much inside the womb as they do outside, so if you go several hours without feeling any movement, you shouldn't worry. I'm 25 weeks and I don't feel much, and when I do it's usually only when I'm laying down. She also said that if you are worried once you reach the third trimester, you could try drinking some orange juice and laying on your left side to see if that wakes baby up. I feel like there was one other tip she gave us for that but I can't remember right now!

I am 24w1d, I just saw my doctor yesterday and she told me to start kick counts. She said "10 movements in an hour" but I don't think she meant every hour! She said to pick a time when I am resting. She said babies like to be swayed and rocked, and when we are busy and moving, they sleep. So when we rest, they go crazy! I feel random movements throughout the day but notice it MOST in the car and at like 10pm when I'm lying in the couch watching tv!
  • I'm almost 26 weeks, and movement is still rather inconsistent. This week, she's been going crazy in there, but last week, I felt very little movement. I have an anterior placenta, so I don't know if where she's at during certain times is making the difference or if she was just sleeping more last week. Two weeks ago at my appt, I told the OB I was worried she wasn't moving enough, and she reassured me that this is all normal.

  • I will be 25 weeks tomorrow and this little one certainly has more active and specific quiet times. She moves alot first thing in the morning, then is quiet until around after lunch, then quiet most of the afternoon, then moves most of the evening until around 11 pm. I fall asleep most nights with her wiggling up a storm until 11. Then I wake up to her around 6 am moving. I think it is totally normal for them to have awake and asleep points at this point in pregnancy.

  • It's too early to worry about consistent movement. Like most said, 28 weeks and up is when most doctors suggest kick counts. Honestly though my doctor doesn't even have patients do them. Once you get later in pregnancy she just tells you to be aware. I didn't dven start feeling my son move until 23/24 weeks with my first pregnancy. Don't worry!

  • If you are moving around a lot chances are you are rocking the baby to sleep. I notice she is most active when I'm relaxing, or after coffee or a meal.
  • At this point, my doctor just wants me to feel LO once a day.

  • At exactly 24 weeks I had baby almost stop moving for over a full day. I got so nervous I ended up being seen by my doctor just in case. Apparently baby had gotten really lazy and wadded herself up behind my anterior placenta. She's made up for it since then by throwing herself a dance party. :)
  • According to my doctor you shouldn't be worried about counting consistent movements until 28 weeks. Before that it is hit or miss.  Just remember that there is still a lot of room in there right now for baby to move without you feeling it.

I am also 24 weeks and I have days where she is going ape crazy in there and other days where I barely feel her. Also, remember they go through growth spurts where they will sleep a little more than "normal" as well.

In the end though, if you are concerned about the amount of movement you are feeling or not feeling -- you should call your doctor and ask what they think.

I'm 25 weeks and have felt movement for some time, but the frustrating part is figuring out the schedule. Just when I think I have it figured out and go through 1-2 weeks of consistent movement at the same time each day, it changes. Baby used to be super active at night, but now seems to be up occasionally during the day as well, which I never used to feel. The oddest thing for me is when I use my fetal Doppler and hear nothing but the heartbeat, which always worries me because even the smallest movements make lots if noise on the Doppler. So, I guess sometimes they just sleep really heavily without any movement. Not much help, but just wanted to say I can relate :)

Thanks to everyone!  These comments have all helped to ease my mind.  I am headed into my next doc appointment soon, so I plan to really talk this out with him or the nurses.  I know my husband is very excited for me to feel better about this, poor guy has had to deal with me worrying WAY too much :)
