Baby learning linked to emotional stability at home

Well a couple months ago I read online about a new program at the Gottman institute called Bringing Baby Home. In it explains the basic brain development and learning abilities of a baby. According to Gottman's research, 69% of new parents experience conflict within the first year of child's birth, but that's no surprise.

Not only does it explain that, but it also explains how emotional stability plays an important role in a baby's developing brain. He conducted an experiment where he gave his marriage intervention counseling to couples preparing to have their first child, or the intervention group, and also had a control group that did not receive the counseling. Gottman found that the babies in the intervention group cried less, and when they grew to be children, where able to focus better for longer, acquired good problem solving skills, and responded to external stressors in stable ways. The babies in the control group however, showed an increase in anxiety and depression in childhood and decreased grades in school.

Stress on the brain severely inhibits a baby or child's ability to focus and retain information.

I read up on his research and I thought it was very interesting. I really want to do the program, I just have to get hubby on board. I think this might be beneficial to those whose relationships are struggling because of the stress of a newborn, so I thought I'd share with you.

I read about the research in the book Brain Rules by John Medina, in it he goes into much more depth than the Gottman Institute website, but here's a link to the program

  • Interesting topic! There are several studies out there showing how early stress impacts brain structure and function of babies and children--from the ACEs study to more academic research.
  • This program supports more interaction with baby. There are studies that show more interaction with babies helps brain development.
