Vaccine delay- NOT a debate -Update

So LOs doctor just called and said that we needed to reschedule our appointment to the next available opening which is July 7th! This would make her 5 months old and a full month behind her 4 month vaccines. The receptionist tried to tell me that it's not that big of a deal in reference to the vaccines as long as she gets them. I'm thinking it is a big deal 1- because I'm thinking this throws her 6 month vaccines back as well as all others in the future. 2- I feel like this makes her susceptible and 3- there's a schedule for a reason, right?
The receptionist said that she would talk to the doctor and see what could be done. I asked if there was another doctor in the office we could see, the answer was no, they have no availability. I then asked to be put on the list in case someone calls to cancel, that we'd be put in that spot.
My question is, is it really not a big deal if her vaccines get pushed back by almost a month?

Update- Well that was fast, someone already cancelled for the following week when we were originally supposed to go with another doctor in the office.
To answer a few replies quickly. Our doctor was going to be out of the office that day and I requested any of the doctors on any day and time. I'm out on Maternity leave until at least February, (Canadian girl here) so we're really flexible.

  • We're in that boat, she turned 4 months on Sunday and won't receive her 4 month vaccines until June 27. Not ideal, but with the way the dosing schedule worked out along with our schedules, it's what we had to do.

I'm not super worried about the immunity/susceptibility aspect since it's just continued doses of things she's already received. And yes, it will push back our 6 month vaccines as well, but then it won't matter after that since we don't need to worry about dose spacing anymore.

  • It's not like a baby check up and vaccines are that time consuming. ...that's very odd. Would it actually push all vaccines back or would you then continue on schedule?

  • We delayed 2 of the 4 month vaccines as per our pediatrician's suggestion. W reacted terribly to her 2 month shots (3 days of a fever, uncontrollable crying, a bad rash, etc.) so they wanted to space them out.

I definitely felt weird about it, but have decided to trust my pedi's suggestion. He was very calm and matter of fact and totally unconcerned about the delay. He basically said as long as she gets them within the next few months, she's fine.

I totally understand your concern, and have felt it myself. In the end, I'm going with my pedi's suggestion because I trust that he has W's best interests in mind.

  • Our doc is out of town and we'll wait for her to be back for LOs 4 mo check and shots. LO will be 4.5 months. I don't think it's that huge of a deal.

I do think it's annoying they moved you. I hate that!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • DS won't get his 4 month shots until he's 4.5 months. He got his 2 months at 2.5 months. I'm guessing they'll schedule us to come in around 6.5 months for his 6 months. That's just how it's worked out with scheduling. For that first round I kinda freaked out about it for the same reasons, but the dr said it wasn't a big deal. It's so frustrating though when appointments get canceled and rescheduled at such a later date.
  • We had to have some of DS1's shots pushed back when he was younger because he was sick with an ear infection and they thought it was best to wait.  Everything was fine, but I do understand your concern!

  • My LO will be 4.5m when she gets her 4m round because of a few factors - there has to be minimum time between doses and when I could get a well-visit scheduled.

Re: PPs question about scheduling, I know my Drs have a set number of well-visit appointments per day and the remaining time is left for emergency/urgent scheduling for sick kids. So it's not necessarily that there is zero appointments, just the time available is reserved for those last minute needs.

Why are they canceling her original appointment though? Was there some sort of emergency I'm guessing?

You are right that it will push back 6m vaccines as well. My Drs office wasn't terribly concerned about it. Something else to keep in mind, they start to get protection after the first set so it's not like LO has zero immunity at this point.

  • Landon is a full month behind because he got a cold that refused to go away and doctor wouldn't give him shots because it would compromise his immune system even more. Yes it throws everything off but at long as they are getting them then it will be ok
  • I'm glad this was resolved.  I usually make my next well baby visit on the day of the prior one (so I make the 4 month appt. at the 2 month appt.), so I know it's in the calendar.  My office books 3 months ahead, so this works well for all the appointments at the beginning.

  • Then that's especially annoying that the reschedule was their fault and they still originally couldn't get you in any sooner!
