nurse made a big deal about a milestone

today was DS 1 year checkup.  The nurse asked and I answered.

1.  Does DC bang toys together? Yes

2. Does DC walk? yes  Does he walk holding furniture or on his own? both

3. Does DC repeat words as you say them (or try to mimic)? sometimes

4.  Does DC know mommy, daddy, etc? yes

5.  Does DC play patty cake? no

nurse: no, your child doesn't play patty cake...then she looks at me all weird.

me: no, he doesn't clap with me, but he knows how to give high five, say his name and gives kisses on command

and then she put a big F over the patty cake milestone

wtf?

  • How silly is that?! They don't have lists like that at our pedi office. He just asks me what he is doing, if I miss something that should have been a milestone, he asks about that too, but every child is different anyway.
  • Loading the player...
  • How is a game a milestone??  We never play that with Lucas so when I tried the other night (hes THREE) he totally didn't get it.  I guess she'd give him an F too.... (and who's ever heard of giving a 1yo an "F" on a milestone??).

    She's wacky.

  • That was on a milestone list at my pedi's and when he did EI - but it was just an example. I never play pat-a-cake, so they accepted "wheels on the bus", "itsy bitsy spider", etc - basically anything with hand motions. And it didn't matter if he did the hand motions correctly or not, jst that he attempted with some type of flailing motion.

  • Any type of social game should count for that "milestone."  Kate never got pattycake (I only tried a few times) but she did other songs with hand motions, peekaboo, so big, etc.  If he's social and responsive, I would not worry one bit about lack of pattycake.
  • I don't care about the pattycake.  I just thought it was rude for her to question me like that.  If someone says no, you just mark it and let the dr. handle it.

He plays peek a boo all the time.  But some babies just don't want to do things, but he knows that he likes it b/c he cracks up when I roll it.

  • For us, it was just a "nursery" game - pat a cake, peekaboo, so big.  Anything that they do to get a reaction out of you over and over again.  Mine doesn't play pat a cake either (because I don't so much) - but is a great peekaboo player.  I would chalk it up to a rude nurse and move on.
  • My (almost) THREE year old can't payyypatty cake - because we never do it. I am sure she has the ability to do it, IF we did it together.

Bizarre that THIS is a milestone? I can see CLAPPING or even high 5 (hand eye coordination to meet the other hand) - but actual PATTYCAKE - weird.
