lopsided head?

LO has a crooked looking head and it's freaking me out. I know babies can have some wonky skulls, but his seems to be getting worse. He's rarely on his back, mostly on his sides, and he favors one breast, therefor one side is dominant when we lay down. I'm going to make an appointment with his doctor, but I'm just seeing him in a helmet. I think his hair is coming in red, and a ginger with a helmet is just...wow. ;) Please tell me his head will magically return to normal.

Re: lopsided head?

  • i can't predict what will happen, or comment on the severity of the misshapenness you're describing, but i can say both of my kids had/have a degree of non-uniformity to the shape of their skulls and with kiddo, it all evened out just fine once he started spending less time on his back and sleeping on his belly around 4 months old.  he also had a FLAT head.  tessa does too.

  • All my kids turned their heads in one direction when they sleep/slept. And when they were laying on their backs just playing they mostly turned their heads to one side, even with a lot of tummy time! They spent some time a little wonky, but as their heads hardened (do they harden?) they turned round again. I was worried too but things turned out ok, and do you know any adults with flat spots on one side of their head? Probably not. I'm sure he'll be fine.

  • That kind of thing will usually fix itself. If baby is stubborn about favoring one side and it doesn't quite work, then you can ask your pedi to refer you to a specialist about getting a molding helmet. DD wore one for 3 months and it was no big deal. It fixed the unevenness.

  • My lo has a flat spot on her left side bc she totally favors that side when she lays down. We just saw the pediatrictian yesterday for her 2 month and she said it was NBD just to try to get her to turn her head the other way. So far we have not been successful but I guess worse case scenario she will need a helmet. There are worse things
  • C's head is like that. The pedi told us to try placing him so he looks to the right more than to the left (the front left of his head is more prominent than front right). Based on your photo I would say your LO is the opposite, so should be placed so he looks to his left. So put. Him on the changing table with his head to your right so he turns his head left to see you.

Maybe talk to the doc about torticollis? This is my niece who had it and has cranial sacral therapy by a therapist who followed the guillespie (sp?) approach and now she's as straight-headed as can be.

In the womb she had a knot in her cord and this restricted movement which caused her muscles to develop unevenly on each side. Don't mean to scare you but just wanted to share with what my sis went through.
  • @Yogini6911‌, he totally has torticollis. His head goes to the right, which lines up with his nursing preference and his head wonkiness. I've been attempting stretches when he's asleep, particularly facing out in the sling, that way I can simply tilt his head to the left as he rests. I have a friend who does cranial work and will see him this week.

  • Babies r us has a hat called the tortle. I just picked it up for my twins they have the same issue. It seems to be helping and I also help them stretch out their muscles throughout the day. It's what my pediatrician said to do.
  • Really?!? Going to check it out now!
