Breastfeeding

Repost from D13: Breastfeeding throughout history

I thought this was pretty funny!

My favorite:

Nursing Outside

"Nursing Right outside in the middle of nature. I’m pretty sure that baby could have controlled her hunger long enough to make it into a bathroom stall or a back bedroom or something. All moms have to say is, “Shh…calm down, sweetie. You can eat when we find somewhere private to go. It makes people uncomfortable when you eat - it’s much easier for you to just be patient.” Babies are reasonable beings - they quiet right down. You should try it. Let me know how it works for you."

  • Beautiful photo! Breastfeeding like this was fairly common in the South well into the 1940s and possibly the 1950s and no one would bat an eyelid. However if someone saw you doing a deed like this in New York, Connecticut and Massachussets you would have been shunned straight away!

Yeah there was a culture that breastfeeding is barbaric and only for the poor and uneducated, anyone who knows better would buy formula. It still persists to some degree in our parents and grandparents generation. There were at least 2 women on our BMB who's parents or in-laws were not supportive of their choice to breastfed and pressured them to switch to formula. I can't imagine how maddening that would be.
