Cloth Diapering

Daycare Issue/question

LO goes to daycare only a couple days a week. He is the only infant in cloth diapers (BG 4.0s), though he isn't the first ever. My issue is that they when they check his diaper unless he has a BM they mark it as dry and leave him in it. The afternoon teacher and I were talking about the diapers and she mentioned that sometimes she didn't know if a diaper was wet, so she would change it anyways, which I told her that was preferred as I had never come across a dry diaper when removing the inserts at home. Fast forward to today and LO was only changed 3 times during 12 hours. They did check his diaper, but marked it dry 3 times. So does anyone else have this issue with daycare and cloth diapers? Should I just state that he should be changed 1.5-2 hours no matter what?

  • Yep, I would tell DCP that every time they are changing the other kids they need to change your LO.  Perhaps when you pick up LO pull out an insert from what they call a dry diaper and show her how wet it is? Some people cannot tell by the change in squishiness like an experienced parent.  Heck, even my DH doesn't know what a wet pocket feels like and we used them for 2 years with DS1.

  • My state actually mandates a diaper change every two hours whether it's needed or not. More if needed. My DCP is did say she has a hard time knowing if he's wet, until they go to actually change him.

  • Thanks for the replys, I will talk to them the next time I drop him off. I don't believe I will get any push back, because they are already laying him on the changing table to check his diaper.

  • We've dealt with this issue occasionally.  Like everyone else said, insist that they change him no less than every 2 hours, regardless of if they feel he is wet or not.  Just keep reminding them and if you don't feel like you're making progress, address it with the director.

  • My kids aren't in daycare but I do have this issue with our church nursery. If they don't poop they don't change them bc they say they weren't wet. So yeah I think it's hard for people used to disposables to tell if cloth is wet.

In my case I don't really push it bc they're only there 2 hours max and I just change them before we leave. In your case I agree with everyone else to just ask that he be changed every 2 hours even if they think he's dry. Like you said , they've got him on the table anyway so it shouldn't be an issue.
