Don't exercise at all?????

Hi!

I am having my dating scan on Friday, but at the moment the doc says I am at 7 weeks :)

Obviously with this being my first pregnancy all I know is what I research or the doc tells me, since I have been a very active person for 15 years and strength train 5-6 times a week, I was surprised (and mortified) to hear the doc say that exercise was completely off the cards. She said that overheating the body is as dangerous to a foetus as smoking! I have read so many blogs and websites saying exercise is good for you and your baby and long as you listen to your body, so I am confused. I have not been put in any "special case" category and I'm healthy, so I wanted to know how everyone else is keeping fit? Or if your doctor said the same to you?

I have been exercising because it makes me feel happy and healthy, but it's really been worrying me what the doc said???? making me feel like looking after myself is doing the wrong thing???

thank in advance...

  • It sounds strange to me too. I know you aren't meant to overdo the exercise when pregnant but keeping it to a similar level to how you've always been - I always thought that was fine.  I too would ask the doctor why his/her recommendation is contrary to all the information out on the web about this.

I think stomach crunches etc might be problematic when you are a little further on. The body "heating up" thing is true (i.e., it is something to watch out for) but I thought if you are already a fit person used to the exercise then it's unlikely your body would overheat. Now if you were not fit and not used to exercise and suddenly went on a huge work out routine - then you might overheat.
  • I do 5Ks and my doc said as long as I feel ok I can keep doing then so that sounds a bit odd to me. I know there are some things that really good to keep doing but for the most part exercise is encouraged. I would ask your doc to elaborate and say why you can't. Or maybe see what specifically you can't or if EVERYTHING is off the table.
    Good luck

I'm high risk for a variety of reasons and my dr has said I can continue doing zumba and barrre classes, as long as I listen to my body and pay attention to it.  Last pregnancy I did (modified) zumba till 31 weeks.

  •  I would also look for a new doctor. If you've never run a marathon before, now's probably not the time to do it, but there's no reason you can't continue with your regular fitness routine while using common sense.

This sounds like a really strange thing to say.... I ride horses professionally and with DS rode (5-6 horses a day) for the first 12 weeks with my OB's permission and then continued about 14 weeks after that after talking with an OB who actually rode horses and knew what it all entailed. So I was exercising about 8 hours a day for a good 24-26 weeks. Even after I was done riding I was still on my feet in the heat for hours at a time. In fact, about 2 weeks before my due date I was on my feet at a horse show for about 10 hours with the heat index being in the 100's. Yes, my feet did swell and I had braxton hicks but compared to some of the stories I heard from other trainers who had multiple kids I was taking it pretty easy! One person I knew told me she rode 3 horses the day she went into labor and 5 horses 4 days after! (ouch) I think you need to do what you feel is comfortable and safe (riding after 26 weeks was neither for me) but I had a super easy and very healthy pregnancy and I really think it was because I was able to stay active and healthy. No exercise at all seems like a ridiculous thing to recommend.

  • Thanks, I thought it was strange too, my hubby was with me and we looked at each other with disbelief, he is a strongman and I used to be a powerlifter and figure competitor, so we spend a lot of time in the gym, now I just do basic strength training at lower weights, I am so glad to hear everyone else thinks exercise is healthy during pregnancy. I have an appointment in a couple of weeks so without sounding like I am doubting her, I will "gently" ask why I should stop after years of being very active, I don't want to offend her but it does against everything I am!

    Thanks again

I was working out every day as well. I started reading about how common miscarriage is and decided that until I was out of the first trimester, I was going to take it easy and just relax and work on my thesis and dissertation. I live in Arizona so it is super easy to get over-heated. Before pregnancy I had trouble regulating my body temperature and now, I have to sleep in sweats and wake up to kick the blanket off, and put the blanket on throughout the night. Maybe just explain to her your predicament. I don't think you'll offend her. Ask her how much is too much and work around those contraints.

  • Overheating the baby like sitting in a hot tub is bad.

Exercise is good. They make a magazine call fit pregnancy ffs! My Dr always told me any activity that you did prior to pregnancy you should easily be able to do. I had a very physical job and went to the gym a few times a week during my last pregnancy. Id be looking for a new doctor.

I wouldn't have worried about working out and overheating and living in AZ except that it's averaging at 107 degrees during the day here, and I had issues prior to becoming pregnant regulating my body temperature. Not doing anything is painful, because I am usually always active. I feel like a blob. I know that in another five weeks though, I'll be able to get back to some semblance of activity that doesn't include domestic and work related things. :)

I am also extremely paranoid because miscarriage runs in my family. But every body is different!

I have already talked to my doctor and my OBGYN about it. I do have a comprimised immune-system. When I said that I wasn't going to work out for five weeks, that meant that I was taking it easy during the first trimester because the chances of me miscarrying due to my own bodily issues diminish slightly. Second, when I said I was going to work out, I didn't mean I was going to go running in 115 degree heat. I do live in a house that is air-conditioned, and kept cool during the summer due to the issues I have when my ability to regulate my body temperature. I don't think you live in my house and I while you may think that you can make these assumptions and judgments about me from a few posts on a website, you cannot. We are watching my pregnancy very closely because miscarriages and still births run in my family. My mom had six before she conceived me, and my aunt had about ten before she was able to carry to term. If you think that I am not following this pregnancy and annoying my PCP and my OBGYN, you are insane. Since my OBGYN told me NOT to work out in the first trimester, I am NOT working out. Is there anything else you want to know so you can belittle me a bit more?

So maybe instead of being catty with me, you can try to understand the simple fact that I am a terrified first time mother who has already miscarried once and happens to be looking for people to talk to about my fears and excitement, other than my OBGYN and PCP.

I think you need professional help because you have some serious mental issues. Whatever though. World Cup is on. Have a good one.

Your blood pressure should be around 120/80.

If you/she meant heart rate, that is out dated information.

Yep.  I am still running at almost 36 weeks.  My heart rate is usually about 170-180 during my runs.  Completely normal for the pace I'm going and I am not exerting myself that hard.

I would find a new doctor

I love my OB and she has encouraged me to continue training.  I've run 3 races since becoming pregnant and have a 12 miler coming up at 16 weeks.

  • My Dr told me that I can continue to exercise since I was doing it before I got pregnant. I'm a fitness instructor and teach 6 days a week. The best thing to do is listen to your body, if you need to stop than stop.

  • "Breaking bad on the keyboard" (as my students would say) is really a sign of immaturity and a lack of intelligence. When people posts questions, just answer them if you so chose. The rude comments, cursing, and just plain nastiness is really getting ridiculous. Why so much hate and animosity on a forum that was originally designed to be a helping place for moms and moms to be?

From my understanding, you should be allowed to do what you were doing before you got pregnant, just don't up your weight. But don't quote me on that. I would continue your exercise and get a second opinion. Or better yet, a new doctor.

    It's a BOY

  • Just for clarification, the reason why I mentioned the original reason why the bump was created is because it is plastered everywhere on the bump forums for newbies. Having led a support group for my students in the past, if this is supposed to be one big network of support, perhaps they need to rewrite some things (see below) .Ah well, life moves forward and this is no biggie. I am a Christian and a minister's wife, so I guess I have just learned how to communicate differently. "Welcome to The Bump Community! We’re so happy you’re here. We want you to get the most out of your experience on our boards, so we’ve created a little guide to help you get started. We created The Bump community for you to connect with women who are going through exactly what you’re going through -- think of it like your own big support group! I'm sorry, but can you please explain what the bolded has to do with anything?

Also, did you really just suggest what TB should use in their marketing materials?

What the hell does your religious affiliation and your husband's occupation have to do with anything? Are you stating that you're better than others for the two reasons referenced above.

All you have shown me is that you're a condescending, holier-than-thou, she-demon from Hell.

What the hell is with people clinging to their spouse's occupation as their source of knowledge?

No clue. Maybe their deferring to the individual with more education? Or regressing to the 1950s.

  • well, ignoring this second page which seems to be full of crapola, in reference to my original question, and after much of the advice offered from those genuine people who responded, I am seeing a different doctor on Friday and will ask my exercise question of her, hopefully not everyone at that clinic has the same old fashioned opinion.

Thanks to those of you with something of use to contribute.

  • I am unable to do any type of working out until after the first trimester--but we conceived with IVF, so  a lot of things are very different in the first trimester. I completely understand the confusion and frustration. I would do as the other ladies have instructed--ask for clarification and possibly find a new OBGYN.
  • Hmmmm what kind of exercise do you normally do? My doc basically told me anything supers strenuous is off the table..but light exercise like walking/yoga is great for you!

You doctor is extremely misinformed and going off very old recommendations.

STRENGTH TRAINING EXERCISES. HELL YEAH. TONE WHILE I GROW.

In other words, @WhoCanItBeNow was right when I was hyper-paranoid about doing anything and I'm stoked to be able to work out again. I feel like a fluffy fluff marshmellow puff.

  • I also vote for getting a second opinion.  I asked my doctor about exercise when I was about 5 weeks along because I exercise for my job (I'm a dog walker).  She said if your body is used to a lot of exercise, it's safe to keep going with exercise that isn't high impact.  She just said to always stay hydrated and "listen to my body".  I think that's pretty good advice.  When I feel cruddy, dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous, I back off and rest.  The popular opinion from doctors and books that I've consulted is that moderate exercise is good for you and your baby so long as you don't over do it.
  • That's weird! My Doctor only said no high impact sports but even Jogging is ok.
