The Class Biter.

Yup. Its my kid. She is the classroom biter. Suddenly she has taken her aggression out with biting. She is biting the same 2 girls (her "best" friends who recently moved up with her to the toddler class) at least once a day. The parents are starting to get concerned and I got a call from the daycare owner today, she was very empathetic and understanding, they are trying to work with us but she did mention that they had an aggressive biter once last year and after 4 months they had to ask the family to remove him from their daycare. Does anyone have any advice to help us curb this behavior? I am literally beside my self she has been acting out like crazy lately as I know a lot of our kids have.

  • They agree it is a normal behavior but I think they get pressured from the other kids parents. They do time outs with her and they use a chair that she can be buckled in to so she cant get up and walk away and she recommended I try that at home too. I ordered "teeth are not for biting" to read at home and they started reading it to her at school too. They also recommended sending "chewy" foods for her to snack on through out the day as well.

  • @chricast‌ I would take huge issue with buckling a child into a chair. That's restraint and sounds extremely dangerous to me and inappropriate. If your child needs to be removed she should be taken into another room or space with an adult.

My kid is also biting and I am approaching it from a behavorist standpoint. We are trying to train him in a replacement behavior. He's very verbal so we are trying to get him to say "my turn" and hold out his hand as his biting happens when he wants something someone else has.

I recommend coming up with a plan with daycare that does not involve restraint.

I think it is more of a highchair type chair. I didnt think of it as something extremely dangerous or inappropriate at all. Emma isnt consistently verbal with actual words. It is hard for me to work with her on saying and alternate phrase to a kid because when she is not at day care it is just her and I during the day, and yes she has bitten me for no good reason as well. Most of the time she is unprovoked at daycare as well.

  • I don't have much to add, but I think the other parents should be more understanding. My girls have been bitten many times and I don't make a stink over it. They are hitters now, so I hope others understand that this is toddlerhood!

  • @chricast‌ try an alternate action. You need to talk to daycare and get them to use and reinforce the same action.
  • I hope it gets better @chricast. Wesley has been bitten and has also been the bitter. I understand and am not mad at the other parents because they are toddlers and this is the stage they are in.

Doesnt it make you just want to burst in to tears right then and there? Thats how I feel anyway. I was so glad we didnt have any biting yesterday.
