Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When did you introduce solids?

Hi everyone!

With my first, I offered him solids at 4 months. This time around, there seems to be more of a push to wait until 6 months.

When did you introduce solids to your current LO and why did you do it then? What was the first food you offered?

Just curious and trying to decide what to do...

Thanks!

Re: When did you introduce solids?

  • There are guidelines for when to start baby on solids.  I think the biggest cue you may want to look for is that baby won't push as much food out of their mouths as they keep in.  I also have read that this happens for most babies by 4-6 months.  Sometimes later (is what my doctor said). It really just depends on your baby's development.

You're probably not in Canada, but there have been new recommendations that have been released here. It may give you a good idea of how and when to start.

  • DH wanted to start earlier but I wanted to ask the ped. She gave us the okay at our 4 month appt. We started with rice then oatmeal. She moved onto sweet potatoes then bananas, we are now on peas. She will be 6 months at the end of the month.

  • Thanks for the input everyone!!

LO is showing many of the signs I usually see (fussy after BF or bottles, loss of tongue reflex, cranky when he sees us eating, grabbing my hand when i'm eating etc) so i've been trying to decide what to do. He's also very big for his age, so it's not that he's not getting enough breastmilk.

  • My LO was born at the end of January and was 4 months old at the end of May. He was trying to sit up on his own and watches us and fusses as we eat, so we knew it was time. He loves eating and it really only took him two tries with rice cereal to get the hang of it. Now we feed him twice a day with rice cereal and will start vegetables with him at the end of this month probably starting with either carrots or sweet potatoes.

  • 6 months because he didn't seem interested until then

When your baby is interested. Because LO is at risk of developing celiacs due to family history we tried to introduce wheat into his diet in the 4-6 month old window due to emerging research about introducing allergens early. But I'd still go by what your doctor says. Mine was all into it for about a week then didn't care for a couple of weeks. He regained his interest and is now eating finger foods along with purees at almost 8 months old. He loves feeding himself.

  • We started after her 4 month checkup bc she was drinking 34 oz and following us. She's had cereal, apples, sweet potatoes. My pedi gave me a list and order with all fruits and cereals rice oatmeal barley. I really didn't want her to have all fruits first so I made apples sweet potatoes peas and green beans. So I think I will do peas next. I heard mixed things like all orange then green, veg's then fruits. I don't think it matters as long as I keep a week between new things.
  • 6.5 months or so. She tried toasted bread sticks first. Then we did sticks of banana, apple slices, hunks of beef, cucumber sticks, Cheerios, broccoli florets.... Whatever was around the house.

Not until after 6 months. Why? There is no need to introduce solids earlier and I had no desire to rush to feed them solids (or deal with the poop that comes with them). We never did any cereal. We did avocado first.

This was us with DD1. She showed interest in food around five months and took to avacados then puréed beans like a champ at six months. DD2 will be five months next week. She loves watching us eat, but is not grabbing for food yet. I'm also not looking forward to the poop and the mess. I'll probably do rice cereal and avacados at six months as well with her.

  • We started at 4 months with sweet potatoes. He has now had green beans, pears, and bananas as well. He likes it. Pediatrician said to try since he drinks so much formula during the day.
  • We got the go ahead from our dr. when LO was four months but he just wasn't very interested.  Tried again just after five months and all of a sudden little man was gobbling up food.  I know the recommendation is closer to six months but I think you really just have to go off of what your LO wants.  Even with dr. approval my LO was just not ready so we waited to try again.  My guy will be six months in just a little over a week and now I can't get solids in him fast enough :)
  • 4 months. LO would get really upset when he was around us and we're eating, he'd be smacking his lips, trying to situp, trying to grab food from my plate etc. After the second spoonful, he figured it out and never let's any fall out of his mouth so he was definitely ready.

just watch for LOs signal (my personal opinion).

I originally wanted to EBF until 6 months but after seeing how badly he wanted it (and getting Dr's okay of course) we started the solids. His daycare teachers are shocked at how well he's eating so it reinforced my opinion that he's ready.
