Parenting after a Loss

Questions re: sleeping stuff

I know DS is barely 2 but I don't remember ANY of this...DD is sleeping in a bassinet next to our bed. Occasionally I'll bring her into bed around 4:30am, which is when she starts fussing but will go back down easily if I bring her in bed. I've been putting her in her crib for all naps, however, for about a week and a half in the hopes of transitioning to her crib at night soon. Initially she was doing great and napping for 1-2 hours in there. For the past three days, the longest I have gotten her in there is 30 mins and that was only one nap. Most have been 5-10 mins and then she wakes up crying.

I put her in there after she's been asleep for about 30 mins so she's in a deep sleep when I put her down, and I swaddle her. I also use white noise. I feel like I'll never get her in there at night if I can't get her in there more than 10 mins at a time during the day. What else can I do? Should I be putting her in drowsy but awake already so she's not surprised when she wakes up in there? I thought that happened a bit later but I don't remember. Am I doing it backwards? Should I be getting her in there at night first and then try for naps? We had so much success initially so I didn't think I was doing it wrong but now it's not working out so well.

DS slept in his crib from day one, so we never went through this. And I cannot for the life of me remember when I started putting him down awake. Any advice? TIA ladies :-)

Re: Questions re: sleeping stuff

  • Boy I wish I knew the answer to this one. DS is 6.5 months old and he will sleep the first few hours every night in his crib in our room but then he insists on sleeping with us. It used to be fun to wake up to baby smiles and coos. Now we wake up to a baby hitting our faces or sticking little baby fingers up our noses. :-|

I don't know why he won't sleep in his crib, it's literally 2 feet away from the bed. C'mon baby, Mommy and Daddy need to get busy making you a sibling!

He won't sleep in his crib for naps either, only his mamaroo. Picky little guy.

  • My LO naps great if I just let her fall asleep whereever she is, but if I actually put her down in her crib for a nap she cries or only sleeps a short amount of time.  However she sleeps in her crib at night and has since day one.  She's just not a good "planned napper" so far.

I say try it at night once and see what happens.  Maybe you just have a poor napper like mine.

  • Thanks ladies. I did get her to take one 1.5 hour nap in the crib today so I consider that a huge victory. I like jenek's idea of trying one nap a day in the crib and working up from there so she can get some good sleep rather than insisting on the crib every time and having her not get any good sleep during the day. She sleeps pretty good the first stretch at night...from 10 til 2:30 or 3:00, so maybe she would sleep well in the crib. I'm kind of being a wimp about moving her though. It's so nice to hear her breathe and see that she's ok. And I'm so afraid that if I move her into her crib at night, it will be absolute hell and we won't even get that one 4 hour stretch. Ughhhh. I so did not miss sleep issues.
