January 2014 Moms

Pumping question and super late intro.

I've been lurking quite a while but thought I should finally say hello! I have one little boy, Patrick, born at home on January 14.

I was wondering if those who pump get more on certain days of the week. I just started pumping in the morning at got more today than all last week.

Thank you!

Re: Pumping question and super late intro.

  • First: Welcome!

Second: It takes a few days for your body to get the message to make milk when you add a pumping session.  That could be why you are now starting to get more - your body is now on board with that new pumping session in the morning and is making milk for it.

I find I make more milk in the morning and I tend to have a higher output on Mondays as compared to Fridays (by about 2-3 ounces).  I attribute this to nursing on demand all weekend while during the week I only pump twice a day and nurse on demand in the evenings after work.  Each weekend I feed more often than I pump and by Monday my body is making milk for more frequent feedings.  By Friday it is back to normal pumping routine.

Personally, I do not want (or feel I need) to add more pumping sessions becasue I already get more then enough each day (including Fridays) for the next days bottles plus some extra for freezer stash.  At this point my freezer stash is big enough that I have at least a months supply for daycare without pumping at all.

  • Generally you get more milk in the morning than in the evening. And I'm a bit of an oddball, but nursing more on the weekends makes my pumping output decrease. I keep a spreadsheet of each and every pump and my Saturday and Sunday pumps are always less than my Monday-Friday pumps at the same hour. I also get more milk as the work week goes on.

    Welcome!!!

And all of what PP said! I had to add in a pumping session at night before I go to bed and at first I wouldn't even get 1/2 an ounce where now I get 2-3 ounces. And I typically make most on Mondays after I had been pumping on demand all weekend.

  • I seem to make the most milk on Fridays, even though I nurse on demand all weekend. But I produce the most in the mornings.

    And welcome!

  • Mornings are always my best time.  I would pump about +/- 10 ounces at my first pumping around 9am at work. I'd get typically at least 5-6oz at my 2nd pumping around 12:30-1pm. Then typically about 4-5oz at my 3rd pumping around 3pm. So, as the day goes on, it decreased what I got, but I was getting more than enough so all was well.

I'ev been home with the kiddos for the last 2 weeks though. Plus DS hasn't been STTN so much anymore. He wakes once around 2am lately. Today is my first day back to pumping & my first session wasn't my usual 10oz. I got about 6oz instead. Hoping things get back on track & back to normal with STTN and my supply works out. Time will tell as we make this adjustment. :)

  • Welcome! I get the most in the morning as well. My day to day total seems to vary without any discernible pattern. I think it depends on how many times LO was up at night.

  • My output was always pretty consistent, but I always had a boat load in the morning. I think my morning pumps would get me 8 oz per breast and then the other pumps throughout the day would get 5-6 oz each.
  • Thanks for the input! Now that I think of it, he did nurse less overnight last night so more in the morning makes sense.
