Cloth Diapering

Toddler pee

Trying to decide if I need to do a bleach wash or just a hot water strip...

Rae's diapers are super funky. It used to just be her ON ones (4.0 with natural fiber inserts) reeking of ammonia in the mornings, but now her daytime diapers (grovia shells with charcoal bamboo insert or grovia insert) have started smelling too.

She's definitely holding it longer, so when she does pee, it's a lot. I don't think they necessarily smell right when she goes, but if they aren't changed right away, they definitely smell by the time she's changed.

Is this just harsh toddler pee or is it time for a strip? If the latter, will a couple hot water washes (no detergent) do it, or should I add 1/8c bleach to the wash?

Also (because I'm needy this morning), should I run ALL the diapers (Alex's NB stuff along with all of Rae's gear) in a bleach wash or just Rae's? Covers/pocket shells included?

Sorry that was a novel... TIA!

Oh, and my wash routine is as follows:

    Every day in the morning
Warm quick wash (no detergent) or cold pre rinse
Whites cycle (hot wash, cold rinse, extra rinse)
Inserts are tumble dried and covers/pocket shells are hung to dry.

Home made detergent of borax, washing soda, and OxiClean. Usually 2 TBS, sometimes a little less than 2

How old is your LO? Has this been your wash routine the whole time? I'm not an expert on homemade detergents, but I'm more comfortable washing our diapers in Tide :-/.

She just turned 2 yesterday. We switched to homemade (from All F&C) a few months ago.

Maybe I'll pick up some tide and alternate between the two. Can I mix them? Would that be bad?

  • Bleach will help, I don't think is a good idea to mix them. A lot of the homemade detergent cause build up, on diapers.

also, could have have build up from the All F&C?  it's notorious for that

I did a hot water strip on her diapers after we got rid of the All. All I think I took care of any build up from that. They stopped smelling in the dryer after the strip

  • For the soaking, do I just soak in plain hot water for a couple hours in the washer?

  • Just wanted to say good luck and I hope you find something that works.  This weekend is the first time I've ever smelled ammonia from a diaper.  It smelled like actual ammonia, not just strong pee.  Yuck!  I'm going to start soaking his ON diaper in the morning, so hopefully that will help.

  • I don't have a good sink or bucket to soak ON diapers in, so I just toss it in our washing machine for a quick rinse/spin cycle. It's a cool or cold water cycle, but uses plenty of water. Seems to help especially with the wetter morning diapers.
  • I just soak it in the bathroom sink.  I fill up the sink in the morning and let the diaper soak all day.

  • thanks ladies! The regular wash just finished so I'll run a hot wash with no detergent, and I'll start soaking Rae's diapers in the morning. If they still smell bad by the weekend, I'll look at getting some tide

This is what I got.  Actually two.  One from labor/delivery room and one from recovery.

Wtf is that for? Are you sure it wasn't to hold your ice water?

Lmao considering that they gave it to me filled with shower supplies I would think not.

  • It would be, but I don't even think there was an ice machine or anything. The nurses brought ice chips in plastic cups, too.

The shower in the delivery room you weren't supposed to be standing in after birth, they pull a seat across and you have to sit, so the bucket works well to rinse. It works great for baby baths, too.

  • Ours was like plasticy or rubber or something. It was just hospital policy. I'm wondering how much is because of liability for if you've gotten an epidural and can't feel your legs well, or if you pass out or something. A nurse helped me get in, and I think she sat in the room waiting for me to help me get out too. It was weird, but I was exhausted and disgusting so I didn't even care.

  • I never got a bucket either. Just a little round one for giving baby a sponge bath.  I wish I would have gotten one of those pitcher things! It'd be perfect for kiddo bath time.

Yeah with D's delivery the nurse was all..."You must Buzz me every time you get out of bed for the first 24 hours." She wanted to watch me pee and shower. I told her no way, but compromised by having her in the room.

G's nurse just had me page her the first two times I got up. After that it was up to me.

I was given a pink basket both times. No pitchers.

Oh and I spray out my ON diapers on weekdays and soak in my sink on weekends.

I use the bucket you get from the hospital

The bucket discussion made me lol. I didn't get a bucket either. And the other day I left my straw cup with handle on the roof of my car (from the hospital with M). Well, it got smashed on the road when it inevitably slid off and got smashed. ETA I cried a little
