Cloth Diapering

Hard water build up.

I don't have washing soda on hand. Is there anything else that will work? I do have baking soda and borax. I also have oxyclean, vinegar and bleach, but I'm pretty sure those don't work for hard water build up.

I noticed that my musty diapers are now reeking of ammonia. :( I think it's the hard water build up and the extra detergent I was using to battle the must. Poo!

  • RLR or Calgon.

  • Darn. It was worth a shot. I'll pick up washing soda or calgon tomorrow.

  • Try to get Calgon rather than washing soda. Calgon binds the minerals so that they rinse away. Washing soda precipitates them out so there's some chance they can redeposit on your diaper if you don't rinse very well.
  • Are there other brands like calgon? I don't want to get there and not have any luck.

  • Not that I'm aware of. I think there's Calgon and RLR, and then everything else. Please someone correct me if you have reliable knowledge of the chemical industry! I think I've only seen RLR online.

Maybe you could try calling the store?
  • Thanks! :)

  • I found liquid Calgon. I am washing them right now. :) I hope it helps! I put a cap full in the detergent dispenser and some in the bleach dispenser. I hope it isn't overkill....

  • I know it's moot now but I think banking soda is a softener, just a very weak one.

  • Yay! Let us know how it goes.
  • Darn! I should have thrown all my AIOs and inserts in this load. Poo. I will have to do another load. (This load is the one I washed last night and didn't dry so I could use the softener.) Although I won't have any inserts dry if I do that... darn pregnancy brain. I ramble and do dumb things. ;)
