Leaving daycare transition?

I've had no luck in the job hunt so we'll be pulling the kids out of daycare within the next few weeks.

DS has been in full time care since he was nine months. He loves his current daycare. He's used to being surrounded by kids and activities and he has great friends there.

I'm worried that this will be hard on him. Does anyone have any tips to ease the transition?

Has anyone done this before? Pulled an older kid from daycare? How bad was it?

I'm worried about him. I want this to be easy on him and I hate that he will miss his friends and teachers.

Re: Leaving daycare transition?

  • I've had O home with me while on mat leave, so she left when she was just over 2.5y. She lives her dc, friends and teachers and still talks about them, and points out the school when we drive by. Her last day was talked up a lot and they had a little farewell party (nothing major, they gave her a card from the kids).
We've been signed up for lots of activities over the last couple seasons, and that's helped a lot. It sounds like you guys are super active and always going on fun adventures so I don't think he'll be bored!
I can't see tickers - is he old enough for preschool?
Good luck! It'll be like am ongoing weekend for him!

  • Where do you live? Maybe they have ECC (early childhood education) that you can put him in. Some churches offer free or very cheap parent/mother day out programs....I have no personal experience with that. Also depending on where you are, some neighborhood  organizations have get togethers weekly.

  • He'll be four in August so we'll do some preschool then.

I'll see if we can slow his transition, and I'll start to make contacts with the other moms for play dates.

We rent so I doubt our landlord would want the liability of me babysitting.

Thanks, guys! We'll probably have play dates two days a week and I'll see if we can do a story hour once or twice a week as well.

  • See if you can get the names of some of his friends and arrange times to see them even once he's out of daycare.
