Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Red bumps show up randomly

Dd is 16 months and for the last few months she will get tiny red bumps, not really raised around her mouth (she still uses a paci) her pediatrician said its likely from drool and the pacifier, however she also will get a random larger red bump on her cheeks once in a while. Sometimes they have a whitehead that goes away. She doesn't scratch them and they don't seem to bother her but noone can tell me what they are. She also has a persistent red bumpy diaper rash. Doc gave me nystatin but it doesn't keep it away. It comes and goes and doesn't seem to cause her much pain.

Unlikely to be an insect bite of any kind and I'm hyper vigilant about that because I'm phobic about certain insects.

These bigger red bumps on her face will randomly show up and go away on their own and they're usually isolated.

Anyone experience this? I

My daughter (uses soother for naps) has red bumps around the mouth.  A doctor we saw (for a yeast infection in diaper) said it was not related to the yeast and is very common and is plugged ducts (or was it plugged pores).  Basically the slobber and the soother plug up the pores.

I try to wash her face more often.  Also, I've noticed that if we are lazy and just use baby wipes to wash her face the red spots are more common.  If we use a soapy cloth it seems to clean her face better and ease the red spots.  I don't find them overly noticeable and they cause no irritation to my daughter.  Just one of those random toddler/baby things.

Have you tried monistat on the diaper?

  • Thanks for the feedback! I will try Monistat. We've tried desitin, butt paste, nystatin and a&d.

The little ones around her mouth flare up once in awhile but the slightly bigger ones that show up on her cheek
Have me stumped. I wonder if it could be from wipes though because I frequently use them to wipe her face. I use the sensitive ones from Walmart but maybe it's still causing it..
  • I was using store brand sensitive wipes and dd seemed to always have minor irritation. I switched to the Huggies natural wipes and it's gone.
I often use wipes on her face as well.

  • My daughter had a strange diaper rash that was just random red bumps. Doctor said it was folliculitis, an inflammation of hair follicles. She had me use neosporin instead of diaper rash cream, and it worked like a charm.
  • DD had a horrific diaper rash related to an antibiotic she was taking for strep throat and the doc had us use 3 parts Lotrimin mixed with 1 part hydrocortisone cream on her bum until we were done with the antibiotic.  It cleared up the rash within 24 hours.  And when I say horrific I mean read welts with white blisters that led to DD screaming any time I had to change her diaper/wipe her bum.  We wound up having to give her a short bath with every diaper change for the 1 full day we were using the cream mixture since wipes irritated her.

As for the face, DD had a weird flaky spot on her lower jaw for about 3 weeks.  The doc said it was related to food and saliva drying on her face so I just made sure to clean her face throughout the day with a wet washcloth and I used aquaphor on it.  It seemed like it was there forever and then one day it was gone and hasn't returned.
