Thoughts on this for a girl

My husbands name is Wesley. He's a junior and originally, if we had a boy, he wanted him to be a third. I was totally against it for several reasons and after talking it over he agreed. We're team green so we're thinking about boy and girl names. Although we've eliminated Wesley for a boy, we thought maybe it would be neat if we did Weslie for a girl. What do you think? Love it? Hate it? Do you want to throw giant flame throwers at me?

My dislike for "juniors" aside, I think Weslie for a girl is downright terrible. The creative spelling...the narcissistic vibe naming after oneself gives (imo)...the fact that it sounds like you are mispronouncing Leslie. Just say no.

I didn't make up the spelling myself. I actually came across a woman with the name spelled that way and that's what gave me the thought of using it. I agree with naming a child after you seeming narcissistic but it's not so much to name the baby after him as it is that I've always liked the name but would never use it for a boy.

  • It's so, so bad. It's a boys' name.

  • It's bad! Wesley is a boys name. I would suggest giving your daughter her own name and finding another way to honor your DH

  • I'm not a fan.  Still sounds like a boys name but if you like it, do it!  It has meaning to you...  You could always do Weslie as the middle name

Not a fan. If you really, really want to use it, I would suggest using the traditional spelling and putting it in the MN place.

  • I like it. But, it could also work really well as a middle name as suggested above. I'm naming our next DD's MN after me. Not narcissistic. I just like it and want to be able to pass it down. I can't believe what strong opinions are expressed here upon people name choices if they are anything but what they deem appropriate. What a boring world that would be if we allowed these people to make all the name choices. If you like it, and it feels right, go for it!
  • I say use it in the middle name spot. DD has a classmate named Anna Wesley... It's used as a double name but you don't necessarily have to call her by both. I think the double name is a southern thing!

Yes, this board will throw giant flame throwers at you.
If you are going to do it, stick with Wesley.  Or use it as a middle name.

@FaerieFaye‌ OP was asking for opinions, so that's what the board gave her. Just lurking a bit anyone can see that this board doesn't sugarcoat it, and by the looks of OP's post about wanting to throw flamethrowers at her it looks like she was prepared for the response.

  • I knew a Weslee (female) in high school, so I wouldn't personally bat an eye at a little girl named Wesley due to my association. But in general, I wouldn't suggest using a boy name on a girl for her first name.

You could give her Wesley as her middle name or just save the name for a future boy if you plan to have more children.

  • Not really my thing... I'm a traditional speller too. I will say I know a beautiful girl named Wesley & it certainly suits her.
  • And I gave my opinion. I don't see the big deal. But thanks for the schooling, I'm sure you like to do that a lot!
  • Nope. If you wouldn't use it for your son bc it's the dad's name, why would you for your daughter?
This. That makes no sense to me. Either have a "third" for a son, or don't use the name at all. I don't like the spelling or that you want to use it for a girl.

Sorry, but while I like Wesley for a boy, I do hate Weslie for a girl.
I'm also confused why you'd use the father's name for a girl but not for a boy.

She asked if we "love it or hate it" with a question about whether we wanted to throw flame-throwers at her. To me she sounded like she was looking for honest responses and was good-natured/funny about it, not thin-skinned. I probably would have gone with the more neutral "NMS/not a fan" rather than hate if she hadn't phrased it that way.

  • Please don't. If you must, use Wesley (spelled properly) as the middle name.

Burn it!! Come on, you can't do that to a girl!

White Knights to the left please.
  • My puppy's name is Westley.  So, I just thing of adorable.  He's a boy though.  I've never considered if for a girl.  While I like some boy names for girls (not a popular opinion), I don't think this one makes the crossover.  Sorry.

  • Sorry, not a fan of this name on a girl. It is all boy to me.

If you are open to suggestions...

    For first letter W

    Willa
    Willow
    Winifred

    For ie ending

    Leslie
    Sadie
    Elodie
    Coralie
    Marie

    For unisex names

    Morgan
    Robin
    Sydney

    Good luck!

  • This thread makes me sad. Our DS is Logan which some people use as a girl name. DH's favorite name for a future DS2 is Wesley and I like it too. But I would hate to pick another name that is being used for girls.
